Job Description

The University of Alabama at Birmingham, IRCP-Biological Data Science Core (U-BDS) is seeking a Computational Biologist to join our team and contribute to cutting-edge research in transcriptomics and next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis. This role offers the opportunity to support diverse research projects across the university and advance reproducible, high-quality computational biology.

General responsibilities: To participate in research activities involved in the analysis of omics data with a focus on transcriptomics data (bulk, single-cell/nuclei, spatial transcriptomics) to the UAB Biological Data Science institutional core. To support research services such as study design, data management, data analysis, pipeline development and to aid in the maintenance of documentation. To instruct and support data analysis workshops. To remain informed with recent literature and other new developments, incorporating new techniques into existing data analysis protocols and pipelines in support of the institutional core's mission of high quality, and reproducible computational biology research.

Analyzes genomic, transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics and other molecular datasets (including single-cell and spatial transcriptomics datasets) in relation to biomedical or biological research. Obtains and pre-processes data from external resources such as public repositories. Assists in the design and implementation of analysis plans to address scientific objectives. Collaborates with others in developing and implementing research projects. Develops pipelines following best computational biology practices (e.g: use a workflow management system) to deploy pipelines in a rigorous, scalable, and reproducible manner. Develops novel data analysis pipelines and workflows to address cutting edge research needs. Performs code review, analysis review, and writes summary reports to collaborators. Prepares figures for publication and helps to write manuscripts. Assists with documenting code and prepares grant progress reports. Presents results internally and to collaborators and other groups. Develops training material.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs computational data analysis of transcriptomics and genomics studies.
  • Designs, develops and implements software tools and analytical procedures supporting bioinformatics analysis.
  • Participates in projects related to the core sustainability including but not limited to pipeline development, web application development, maintenance of documentation and training guides and other services to support the needs of UAB investigators.
  • Provides computational support services such as study design, data management and data migration.
  • Offers bioinformatics consultation services to UAB investigators.
  • Evaluates and identifies new technologies for implementation.
  • Instructs and facilitates educational workshops linked to programming and data analysis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary Range

$85,600.00 - $111,280

Qualifications

Doctorate degree in a related field OR Master's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. None required.

Preferred Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the biological sciences Experience in computational biology analysis Experience in Linux and using a command-line environment
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as, R, Python, and shell
  • Knowledge of best practices of reproducible and scalable research such as version control (git) and environment managing systems (e.g.: conda, Docker, Singularity) Proficiency in the visualization of omics data
  • Experience in High Performance Computing environment
  • Experience in the analysis of single-cell and/or spatial transcriptomics
  • Ability to work as part of a team Knowledge of theoretical and applied statistics, and molecular biology, as demonstrated through previous work or academic experience Problem-solving skills
