The Role:

The University of Cambridge is seeking a highly motivated Control of Works Supervisor to join the Estates Division Asset Management team.

Working across one of the UK's largest and most complex operational estates, comprising over 370 buildings, 723,000m² of academic, teaching and research space, and assets valued at more than £3.4 billion, you will play a critical role in ensuring contractors and Estates teams operate safely and compliantly across the University estate.

As a key member of the Control of Works team, you will oversee the implementation of safe systems of work, manage permit-to-work processes, undertake contractor audits, review risk assessments and method statements, and support compliance with health and safety legislation and best practice.

You will work closely with Estates colleagues, University departments, contractors and Health and Safety professionals to promote a strong safety culture, deliver contractor inductions, provide expert guidance on control of works processes, and drive continuous improvement across permit and compliance systems.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced health and safety or building services professional looking to make a significant impact within a world-leading institution.

About you:

To excel in this role, you will bring:

  • Practical experience of health and safety management within a maintenance, facilities management, engineering or construction environment.
  • Experience reviewing and assessing risk assessments and method statements (RAMS), permits to work, COSHH documentation and safe systems of work.
  • Strong knowledge of contractor management, including pre-start audits and ensuring safe working practices on operational sites.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage confidently with contractors, technical specialists, operational teams and senior stakeholders.
  • The ability to deliver safety briefings, toolbox talks and training sessions to both small and large groups.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficient IT skills and experience working with digital systems and documentation.
  • IOSH Managing Safely (or equivalent) and a sound understanding of current health and safety legislation.
  • A recognised building services qualification or equivalent technical knowledge. A NEBOSH qualification and appointment as an Authorised Person (AP) or Authorising Engineer (AE) would be advantageous.

Please be aware that a Full UK Driving Licence is essential for this role (a full EU Driving Licence is acceptable on appointment, but the successful applicant must transfer to a UK Licence prior to confirming a start date).

Benefits of working at the University of Cambridge include:

  • Competitive pay with automatic annual cost of living increases and service-related progression.
  • Generous annual leave entitlement, helping you maintain a healthy work-life balance.
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements to support your lifestyle and wellbeing.
  • Family-friendly policies, including enhanced maternity, adoption, and shared parental leave, plus access to workplace nurseries.
  • Excellent pension scheme with a generous employer contribution through auto-enrolment.
  • Travel and shopping discounts at over 2,000 local and national retailers.
  • Relocation support for eligible new starters.
