Coordinator, Harm Reduction

Position Highlights

The Harm Reduction Coordinator plays a key role in development of health equity and supporting high-risk populations in Maricopa County. The Harm Reduction Coordinator will administer and promote programs that minimize the negative consequences of substance use and other risky behaviors. This involves coordinating services, providing education, and advocating for individuals who use drugs, sex workers, and those experiencing homelessness. They will work to reduce stigma, improve health outcomes, and connect individuals with resources like housing, healthcare, and treatment options.

The Harm Reduction Coordinator also contributes to monthly and quarterly reports by maintaining accurate records, gathering data, and compiling impact stories and case studies. They serve as a representative of the program at community meetings and events, to build and sustain strong partnerships with local organizations and service providers.

In addition, the Harm Reduction Coordinator helps arrange volunteer engagement, including student and physician volunteers from the University of Arizona and partner institutions (ASU, NAU, Creighton, Mayo), and participates in educational efforts such as guest lectures related to harm reduction in clinical and community settings. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about community health, values collaboration, and is committed to making a direct impact through street-based outreach.

Duties & Responsibilities

Program Development and Implementation:

  • Developing, coordinating, distributing, and evaluating harm reduction programs and services under the Community Engagement and Outreach Programs in Phoenix.

Outreach and Engagement:

  • Reaching out to individuals in need, building rapport, and connecting them with resources throughout Maricopa County.
  • Will work closely with peer support specialist and program manager to connect individuals with services such as healthcare, housing, substance use treatment, and other support systems.

Education, Training, and Partnerships:

  • Providing education on harm reduction principles, safer drug use practices, and available resources; and representing the Harm Reduction program.
  • Building partnerships with other organizations and community stakeholders to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Advocating for the rights and needs of individuals who use drugs and promoting a non-judgmental, compassionate approach.

Reporting:

  • Maintaining records, collecting data, and reporting on program outcomes including all activities and beneficiaries and compile case studies and success stories.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
  • Skills in public speaking and presenting information to small or large groups.
  • Ability to lead and guide others.
  • Ability to support in reports.
  • Ability to successfully and appropriately refer patients to community resources with reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to identify and address challenges, develop solutions, and adapt to changing situations.
  • Ability to take initiative and problem-solve when needed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are crucial for building trust and rapport with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • An understanding of health equity, health disparities, and general public health is required.
  • Knowledge of Harm Reduction such as understanding principles, drug user health, and related issues.
  • Lived experience preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required. Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference for a Masters degree in Public Health or equivalent advanced learning degree. Significant previous experience working with or interacting with people experiencing homelessness or other marginalized populations. High knowledge of community resources in Maricopa County. Fluency in Spanish, preferred.
