Job Duties:
The Coordinator of Aquatics is a full-time employee responsible for the administration of a comprehensive Lifeguarding program, which includes, but is not limited to, supervision of student lifeguard and supervisory staff, swimming and diving meets, events, certification programs, and risk management protocols in multiple campus locations for the University of Wisconsin–Madison. This individual will hire, train, schedule, and mentor a staff of approximately 100 student employees across three locations: the Nick Soderholm Family Aquatic Center, Bakke Cove Pool, and Memorial Union Swim Pier, and will coordinate payroll for all supervised employees.
The Coordinator of Aquatics assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures for aquatic facilities and maintains a high standard for risk management procedures, conducting regular training, staff audits, and in-services. They will promote a strong commitment to teamwork and customer service while assisting in coordinating the equipment setup, pool configuration, and lifeguard staffing for all event reservations at the aquatic facilities.
Additionally, the Coordinator provides leadership by conducting student trainings, facility scheduling, maintaining certifications, and budget planning. This role works directly with both professional and student staff to coordinate activities, independently assess problems, and develop solutions.
Key Job Responsibilities:
- Assists with the management of applicable software systems for program registration, sport management, and participation data
- May assist with the implementation of the personnel resource allocation plan including hiring, training, supervision, and resolution of personnel issues
- Implements risk management procedures and ensures adherence to institution and divisional policies
- Schedules logistics and secures resources to support the operational plans of the program
- May assist with monitoring and auditing the unit budget
- Maintain high level of facility safety, cleanliness, and presentation including the completion of routine facility inspections and audits
- Schedule, staff, and oversee administration of American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification program for staff
- Assist in coordinating the equipment setup, pool configuration, and Lifeguard staffing for all event reservations at the Nick Soderholm Family Aquatic Center, Bakke Cove Pool, and Memorial Union Swim Pier
Department: Aquatics
Compensation: Minimum $49,000 ANNUAL (12 months). Depending on qualifications the minimum salary for this position is $49,000. The expected actual salary for this position ranges from $52,000 to $57,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience (including internships and graduate assistantships)
- Experience supervising aquatic staff
- Experience supporting pool operations
Preferred Qualifications:
- Has experience facilitating large American Red Cross trainings and/or certification courses
- Assisted with recreation or competitive aquatic programming
Additional Details:
- Schedule: Primary hours will be Monday-Friday 7:45am-4:30pm. On an occasional basis, exercise flexibility to work evening or weekend hours.

Certifications:
- Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/ First Aid/ CPR & AED
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) or ability to obtain within 30 days
Education:
- Required: Bachelor’s Degree in sports/recreation management, physical education, or related field
- Preferred: Master’s Degree
