Job Summary

To enforce the law, provide service, information and aid to all citizens as circumstances require, prevent crime, suppress disturbances, investigate criminal offenses, and arrest offenders. Provide guidance and supervision to junior officers.

Scope: Responsible for enforcement duties for the protection, safety and welfare of students, employees, visitors, and all property within the area under the control and jurisdiction of Lamar University. Exercises independent judgment within the limits prescribed by law, Rules and Regulations of the Texas State University System Board of Regents, Chief of Police, and police department policies and procedures. Serves as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

Essential Job Functions

  • Perform law enforcement duties on the property under the control and jurisdiction of Lamar University. Preserve peace by the use of all lawful means, interceding, when authorized by law, to prevent or suppress crime.
  • Provide service, information, and directions to students, employees, and visitors.
  • Execute all lawful processes. Arrest offenders with and without a warrant when authorized by law. Investigate criminal offenses to detect and arrest criminals and recover stolen or lost property.
  • Attempt to locate missing people. Enforce traffic law by detecting violations, making violator contacts, placing violators in custody or issuing citations or warnings. Investigate motor vehicle collisions; review reports submitted by junior officers for approval.
  • Enforce any Texas State University System Board of Regents Rules and Regulations. Prepare shift activity reports on all police responses and activity to the Command Staff. Identify potential security and safety hazards, as observed and reported to them by junior officers.
  • Reviews, corrects, and approves incident and offense reports. Perform related duties as assigned by the Sergeant (Shift Commander). In the regular absence of a sergeant, supervises an element of police personnel engaged in law enforcement duties and enforcement of institutional rules and regulations.
  • Completes and submits warrants for the apprehension of suspects. Discuss cases with prosecuting attorneys, prepare evidence, and appear as a witness in court. Provides emergency notification and coordinates police response to major incidents at any University-controlled property. Provides counseling and progressive correction to junior officers, and reports the outcome to the Sergeant for disciplinary review.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 30 college credits (accredited); or 4 years of Honorable Military Service, and currently enrolled in college courses (accredited); or 1 year of active Police Field Training Officer experience, and currently enrolled in college courses (accredited)
  • 18 months of full-time U.S. Commissioned Police Officer experience
  • Basic Texas Peace Officer License

Desired Qualifications:

  • Intermediate Texas Peace Officer License, Field Training Officer Experience.
