Course Assistant
Job Summary
We are hiring a course assistant for a summer outreach course, Introduction to Programming for Biological Research (IPBR), for a mix of instructional and administrative work.
Essential Job Duties
- Manage weekly group project sessions. Students in the course work on group coding projects, and 1.5 hours/week are allocated for group work time where each group works with a mentor. The course assistant will lead these sessions, answering questions from students and mentors during the session itself, keeping groups on task, and handling logistics for the classroom and Zoom rooms.
- Serve as a substitute mentor when individual student group mentors are absent, the course assistant will substitute for them. Mentors work with a student group to guide them through completion of an independent coding project.
- The course assistant will also handle logistics during the lecture component of the course, including managing the Zoom room and coordinating with guest lecturers (an additional 1.5 hrs/wk), and will run a half-day concluding symposium at the end of the course (6 hours total).
- The course assistant will be a point of contact for students and mentors in the class with questions about the independent project (~2 hrs/wk).
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, or related subject.
- Proficiency with Python and Git.
- Experience applying programming methods for biology research.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with machine learning methods in biological research.
- Experience with biological image analysis.
- Experience working with other researchers in an academic setting for biological research.
