Position Summary

Winston‑Salem State University ( WSSU ) is seeking a Housekeeper to provide high‑quality cleaning and organizational services for designated residential spaces as well as buildings across the main campus. Key Responsibilities
Residential Cleaning & Support
  • Perform routine residential cleaning tasks, including dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and polishing furniture, to ensure living and hospitality spaces remain clean and inviting.
  • Maintain organization throughout residential areas by managing inventory, organizing closets, drawers, and storage spaces, and ensuring all items are stored properly.
  • Support guest and event preparation by setting up and breaking down residential spaces used for meetings, hospitality, or special functions.
  • Launder, fold, and iron linens; make beds; change linens; and ensure rooms are neat, hygienic, and prepared for occupants and guests.
  • Provide courteous and professional customer service when interacting with residents, visitors, and university personnel.
  • Maintain confidentiality, discretion, and professionalism when working in private or semi‑private residential environments.
  • Follow safety procedures, report maintenance concerns promptly, and ensure equipment is used and maintained properly.
Main Campus Cleaning Responsibilities
  • Perform high and low dusting, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming in academic, administrative, and common‑area spaces.
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, including fixtures, floors, mirrors, dispensers, and partitions.
  • Shampoo carpets, clean glass, wash walls, and maintain light fixtures as assigned.
  • Empty and replace trash receptacle liners and ensure proper disposal of waste and recyclables.
  • Support routine and project‑based floor maintenance, including buffing, stripping, waxing, and other periodic tasks.
  • Move furniture and operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, auto‑scrubbers, and carpet extractors.
  • Maintain and store cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment responsibly and in accordance with departmental guidelines.

Minimum Experience/Education
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous housekeeping experience, preferably in a high-profile or executive residence.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Residential Cleaning Duties:
Includes, but is not limited to, daily routine/detail cleaning and resupply of assigned residential work areas in a timely manner. Duties include:

  • Refilling tissue, soap, and other dispensers with the proper products and in the appropriate amounts.
  • Cleaning restrooms, including sweeping and mopping floors; cleaning commodes, urinals, sinks, mirrors, and dispensers.
  • Detail cleaning of assigned areas, high and low dusting, and maintaining glass and lobby areas.
  • Completing project‑related tasks such as floor care, deep restroom cleaning, and occasional custodial‑related outdoor work as directed.
  • Maintaining cleaning performance standards while adhering to departmental practices regarding green cleaning processes, safety policies, and assigned routines.
  • Performing absentee coverage as directed.
Additional Duties:
Staff members are also expected to submit supply requests on predetermined dates using departmental request forms. Laundry should be turned in for cleaning and retrieved per supervisory direction, and staff must monitor equipment for malfunctions, provide updates to supervisors or team leaders, and report equipment location changes or repair needs. Staff members are expected to diagnose minor equipment issues (e.g., vacuum cleaner bags/filters) and clean equipment/storage closets per departmental schedules.
