Custodian/Maintenance Worker - Pool
Summary of Position
Perform routine swimming pool maintenance and custodial duties independently, providing a high standard of cleanliness. Standard shift hours and days of work are: M-F, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm.
Required Education
High school diploma or GED equivalency.
Required Work Experience
Custodial/Janitorial work experience in a commercial-hospital-school environment, in a commercial cleaning service, or completion of the Ferris State University JANUS (custodial) training. Demonstrated experience with the correct operation of a variety of commercial custodial equipment, such as vacuum cleaners, automatic scrubbers, high-speed burnishers, single disc scrubbers, carpet extraction/shampoo equipment, or other essential or similar custodial equipment.
Required Licenses and Certifications
Valid driver's license. Pool Operator’s certificate. Within 90 days of hire, successful completion of University-provided training, which results in a University-issued forklift operator’s permit and respirator fit test certification.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Change linens, make beds, and bunk/debunk beds.
- Check fire extinguishers and related equipment as scheduled; report any deficiencies to supervisor.
- Clean, brush, scrub, and vacuum pool/hot tub and related equipment.
- Disinfect restrooms, showers, and locker rooms.
- Empty waste baskets and trash containers. Gather and dispose of trash and foreign material from the assigned area (to include the perimeter of the assigned building)
- Inspect, operate, repair, and report deficiencies of pool/hot tub equipment, fire extinguishers, and other equipment as scheduled.
- May be responsible for carrying, distributing, and delivering custodial supplies and equipment.
- Minimize waste of cleaning, paper, soap, and other supplies.
- Open and close buildings, classrooms, offices, etc., in the assigned areas.
- Operate chlorinators, test chlorine levels and pH levels of water, and adjust pH levels as required.
- Record pool/hot tub maintenance activities.
- Remove snow and ice from entrances of assigned areas, and apply salt as necessary.
- Replace light bulbs, globes, starters, tubes, and light lenses.
- Replenish paper and soap products.
- Report needed maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Report needed repairs to the supervisor or call the physical plant in emergencies.
- Set up tables, chairs, and other related furniture as needed, for classrooms, offices, special events, etc.
- Sweep, wet mop, scrub, strip, and refinish hard surface floors.
- Utilize a household plunger to unplug commodes, urinals, and sink drains without dismantling the fixture.
- Wash and issue such items as towels, uniforms, swimsuits, and dust mops.
- Wash walls, woodwork, windows, blinds, mirrors, bathroom fixtures, furniture, chalk/white boards, and climb ladders.
- Operates a university or personal vehicle safely while carrying out job responsibilities.
- Maintain safety and security of equipment, vehicles, keys, tools, materials, and inventories.
- Maintain safety, health, and quality standards in all duties and responsibilities.
- Report to immediate supervisor.
- Train and guide the work of other employees in the performance of the characteristic duties.

- Support, promote, and develop university student enrollment and retention initiatives.
- Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
