Cytotechnologist
Position Description
This position is responsible for providing the technical skills and knowledge necessary in the diagnostic study of cells. Employees in this position determine the appropriate process for specimen preparation and may make initial interpretations of the results. Performs other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned or directed by the immediate supervisor. General supervision is received under the Chief Cytotechnologist. Work is performed under usual laboratorial conditions. Employees in this class are exposed to materials and fluids which may be infectious; works with chemicals and solutions, many of which are flammable or vaporous.
Major/Essential Functions
- Operate a microscope and all cytology instruments.
- Process all specimen types received in cytology.
- Perform special staining.
- Maintain all required documentation.
- Operate and maintain a variety of laboratory instrumentation including surgical instruments (scalpels, forceps, etc) tissue processors, and chemical recyclers.
Required Qualifications
A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in biology or related field; graduated from an approved cytotechnology program. Cytotechnology (CT) ASCP certification registered or eligible for registry. No experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least three years experience in the field of Cytology.
- Completed an approved college program for Cytotechnology, or a 50 week US Military training program.
- General scientific knowledge that includes anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and modern laboratory operation is preferred.
