Who are we?

The UMR Geo-Ocean (www.geo-ocean.fr) is a joint research unit specialized in marine geosciences, with 3 main supervisory bodies: Université Bretagne Occidentale, CNRS and Ifremer, and a secondary one, Université Bretagne Sud. Within the Ifremer structure IT is part of the Physical Resources and Seabed Ecosystems department (REM). Its multidisciplinary focus (geology, geophysics, geochemistry, sedimentology, cartography, etc.) covers the processes that shape the earth from past to present, starting at the coast extending to the deep SEA. Geo-Ocean contains the ALMA team, a group focused on the study of marine hazards. This group is tasked with making major contributions to the study of the deep ocean and to the development of research activities in relation to Renewable Marine Energies, two priority themes of Ifremer and REM. The ALMA team (https://www.geo-ocean.fr/Que-faisons-nous/ALeas-MArins) is involved in a number of national and international projects and initiatives on the use of fibre optic data, with a stated aim of exploiting IT for the measurement of sub-seabed deformation, seismology and geophysical imaging.

ALMA members lead a number of initiatives related to the French national program FRANCE 2030 to promote the use of distributed fiber sensing techniques in marine environments. Current projects include the use of a submarine cable to detect tectonic deformation of a fault off the coast of Catania as well as image its damage zone. Partnerships with industry focus on defining the instrumental response of fibre sensing (i.e. FiberSCOPE project), subsurface imaging and environmental monitoring of offshore wind farms. ALMA is also in charge of the Tamtam project, which will exploit scientific fiber optic and conventional data acquired by a SMART cable connecting New Caledonia to Vanuatu in the Pacific.

What will your mission BE?

You will use data acquired with submarine cables (distributed measurements on optical fibers) to develop methods for the processing and the inversion of DAS (Distributed Acoustic Sensing) data, with the goal to obtain high-resolution images of geological structures at multiple scales. To do this, you will use state-of-the-art geophysical methods such as full waveform inversion (FWI) and innovative techniques based on artificial intelligence (AI), in order to fully exploit the massive datasets that come with DAS acquisitions. Your research activities will support the institute's efforts on current and future projects using submarine cables for deep-sea exploration (France 2030), as well as on geophysical challenges associated with marine renewable energy. By integrating DAS observations with conventional data, such as seabed seismometers (OBS), you will contribute to the high-resolution characterization of active geological processes in the marine environment, as well as to the development and exploitation of DAS technology for monitoring the integrity of subsea infrastructures

What will your activities BE?

  • You will perform the analysis and interpretation of geophysical data (seismology), developing further imaging techniques within ALMA's team for physical characterization of the subseafloor.
  • You will process voluminous datasets using artificial intelligence (machine learning, deep learning, etc.).
  • You will work with the Datarmor team in Ifremer's IRSI computing department to develop programmes for parallel computing and/or other high-performance optimization (e.g. GPU) for geophysical data analysis.
  • You will supervise students at all levels as well as post-docs; to write publications and respond to projects' calls
  • You will contribute to the development of a culture of innovation within the research unit by taking an interest in potential industrial transfers and the economic valorisation of your activities, notably via Ifremer's internal tools (e.g. Institut Carnot MERS).

How are your activities organised?

  • Activity rate: 100%
  • Position based at Ifremer Plouzané, with possible travel for field missions. Offshore and/or coastal SEA campaigns possible.

Le profil recherché

Who are you?

  • Strong skills in high-performance computing and management of large datasets
  • Demonstrated skills in a field related to advanced geophysical data processing and imaging: i.e artificial intelligence for massive data analysis or techniques such as full waveform inversion for seismic data imaging
  • Initial training: PhD in geophysics and/or physics. Post-doctoral experience will BE advantageous

Bienvenue chez Ifremer

Join Ifremer, an ally of planetary well-being, to gain a better understanding of and better protection for the ocean.

From the abyss to the surface, from the coast to the open SEA, Ifremer is the French research institute that is wholly dedicated to the Ocean. Its teams carry out research, innovate and produce expert reports to protect the ocean, exploit its resources in a responsible manner and shares marine data.

Ifremer contributes its scientific expertise to throw light on public policies and develops solutions drawn from the ocean to meet the challenges of the ecological transition. Ifremer is the operator of France's oceanographic fleet with its shipbuilding subsidiary Genavir, and imagines, designs and deploys leading edge technological means to solve the ocean's mysteries.

Join our teams, made up of 1500 scientists and research support staff, present all along the coastal areas of France and French overseas territories.
