Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is the chief academic officer of the college and reports directly to the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The dean has ultimate responsibility for the quality of academic programs and instruction and the effectiveness of educational support and enrichment activities in the college. While the dean must be an effective advocate for the College to internal and external constituents, the dean must also ensure that college goals and outcomes are consistent with the strategic priorities of FSU and Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina. Working with department chairs and faculty and staff, the dean is responsible for utilizing fiscal and human resources as efficiently, effectively, and equitably as possible. The dean has the primary responsibility and authority for the following:
- Developing and articulating a vision and mission that support the goals of the unit and the broader goals of the University.
- Guiding continuous improvement processes in the College that incorporates establishing goals and outcomes, assessing the progress toward achieving the intended goals and outcomes, and using the results of the assessments to guide further improvement.
- Articulating the budgetary needs of the unit, managing the budget allotted, prioritizing allocations, maintaining accurate records of expenditures, and ensuring adherence to university fiscal policies and procedures.
- Overseeing all personnel matters involving academic and non-academic employees including formulating performance criteria and monitoring their application to unit personnel during hiring, tenure, promotion, retention and performance evaluation processes; recommending leave and special assignments to the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; ensuring that faculty in the unit are fully engaged in departmental and general faculty duties.
- Providing a key communication link between the university administration, faculty, and students for purposes of information sharing as well as mediation when necessary.
- Promoting excellence in teaching, scholarly/creative activities, grantsmanship, and community engagement and service to include coordinating the assessment and development of academic programs, and research, scholarship, and service agendas within the unit.
- Acting as a mentor and facilitator for the department chairs as they carry out their missions and evaluating department chairpersons, assistant deans, and other direct reports according to university policy.
- Promoting fundraising activities for the College and by units within the College, supporting and participating in university level fundraising, and promoting the visibility of the college in the region, state and nation.
- Serving on university committees as requested by the Provost/Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and the Chancellor.
- Completing other duties as assigned by the Provost/Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Chancellor.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements:
- An earned doctorate in one of the College's disciplines or a closely related discipline from an accredited college or university.
- At least eight years of higher education administrative experience that includes service as department chair.
- Accomplishments in teaching, scholarly/creative activities, and community engagement/service that qualify the candidate for appointment as a tenured faculty member within a department in the college.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of postsecondary education, to include budgeting, assessment, organizational structures, faculty recruitment and retention, instruction and academic support.
- Comprehensive knowledge of assessment in higher education.
- Practical knowledge of technology tools that are used in the functioning of higher education institutions.
- Excellent communication skills that enable the dean to articulate the visions, mission, and needs of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences to multiple internal and external constituencies.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills needed to manage a multi-unit, multi-disciplinary academic unit.
- Effective budget management skills to include allocation of funds based on strategic priorities, promotion of operational efficiencies, and development of thorough and accurate budget reporting.
- Ability to build consensus and collegiality among faculty and staff with disparate interests and sometimes competing demands.
- Ability to evaluate staff to promote ongoing professional development.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously.
