Job Summary
The Dean of Arts & Sciences oversees the administration and supervises and supports the academic instruction in the following areas: English and Humanities, Communication, Math, Sciences, Digital Arts and Media Design (DAMD), Art, Music, GED/ABE, and labs for Science, Art and DAMD. oversight, and direction to advance the college’s strategic goals. The Dean represents the Arts & Science areas on the Vice-President’s staff. Due to the need of interaction with students, employees and the college community this position requires in-person presence. This position is eligible for telework based on Telework policy.
Essential Job Functions
- Ensure that all Arts & Sciences Programs are in compliance with State, Federal, and other regulations. In accordance with the CAO, faculty and staff, recommend academic/instructional policies and procedures for Arts & Sciences and non-credit programs which include curriculum, course scheduling, faculty and adjunct assignments, evaluations and promotions and contract renewals. Ensure that all policies and procedures are reviewed and updated in a timely manner. Ensure maintenance of records/files of course syllabi and program curricula submitted by faculty and approved by the Academic Affairs Committee.
- Demonstrates the ability to build collaborative relationships with diverse faculty members, identify and address their needs to support student success initiatives and foster positive educational outcomes.
- Ensure Arts & Sciences course and program assessments are completed within the prescribed timeframes.
- Provide oversight and leadership in the development of the Arts & Sciences operational budgets by collecting, consolidating and prioritizing department inputs. Monitors expenditures monthly for reconciliation.
- Provides day-to-day leadership and coaching to staff and faculty; ensures cross-training/coverage as needed within areas, and supports professional development
- Supervise the recruitment and hiring for staff and faculty positions. Conduct Performance Evaluation reviews in support of the Performance Management Program.
- Conduct and review faculty evaluations for all areas in division
- Participate in public relations activities for the College.
- Oversee the development and submission of mandatory reporting, and accreditation reports. Currently includes: state and federal reporting for GED/ABE programs.
- Serve on advisory boards for department disciplines such as but not limited to: ABE/GED, DAMD, Art.
- Serve on college committees as directed by supervisor or designee.
- Facilitate the grant application process, providing or coordinating discipline expertise as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements to Perform Work
- A Master’s degree is required; doctorate preferred.
- Teaching experience at the post-secondary level required; a minimum 2 years experience preferred.
- Minimum 2 years academic leadership experience, 5 years preferred

- Aptitude in technology use such as but not limited to: Microsoft office; e-mail; Canvas ®; Power point ®; and various forms of social media.
Additional Information
Scheduling Requirements: Office hours may vary depending on the assignment to be completed. Ability to work a varied schedule during critical periods including evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays. This position supports staff, faculty and students at Cecil College’s main campus in North East, MD, its additional location in Elkton, MD and all additional instructional sites. Travel between these locations is required. Position is expected to have routine coverage at Elkton location as required by supervisor and/or designee.
Physical Demands: This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as sedentary work involving lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and occasionally lifting or carrying articles like docket files, ledgers, and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required occasionally, and other sedentary criteria are met.
Work Environment: .Private office that must be open and accessible to College staff, faculty, and visitors. Nature of responsibilities dictates work to be subject to interruptions and numerous distractions.
This is an exempt position (not overtime eligible); Grade 121 (pay scale:$81,295-130,072 ). Based on the budget, the salary for the position will be $117,000-121,000. Applicants' initial salary placement is based on internal equity and relevant candidate experience.
