Job Description
Missouri S&T seeks an experienced, compassionate, and strategic leader to serve as the Dean of Students. This role plays a central part in cultivating a safe, inclusive, and supportive campus environment by leading student conduct efforts, coordinating crisis responses, and managing key student support operations. The Dean of Students acts as a vital bridge between students and university support services, upholding community standards while advocating for student success and well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
Student Conduct & Community Standards
- Oversight of the review and adjudication of student conduct cases, including academic integrity violations and behavioral concerns
- Serve as the first appeal level, meeting with students to discuss alleged violations and evaluate appropriate outcomes
- Coordinate conduct hearings and appeal panels in accordance with university and system policies
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of conduct cases for internal and external reporting
- Lead education efforts related to student conduct policies, rights, and responsibilities
Student Support
- Coordinate responses to student crises, including class absence notifications, death notifications, and wellness concerns
- Provide referrals to campus and community resources as needed
- Actively participate in behavioral intervention to support students in distress
- Follow up on wellness checks and incident reports with discretion and care
Administrative & Operational Tasks
- Serve as the primary contact for addressing student and parent concerns, complaints, and grievances. Resolve concerns directly, reducing unnecessary referrals
- Draft policy updates, memos, and formal responses to student and parent concerns
- Oversee the department’s budget, including purchasing and personnel requests
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate professional and support staff within the Dean of Students office
- Serve as a key campus leader during student-related incidents or crises
Collaboration & Coordination
- Partner with legal counsel, Title IX, and other university offices on student-related matters
- Collaborate with University Police and emergency management during campus incidents
- Attend and provide leadership at major campus events, including student demonstrations, vigils, or high-visibility activities
Crisis Response & After-Hours Duties
- Serve as the administrator responding to after-hours student emergencies, including hospitalizations or deaths
- Engage directly with students and their families during critical incidents with empathy and transparency
- Provide consistent communication with university leadership during crises
Assessment, Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain and organize comprehensive case documentation and prepare annual reports on conduct trends and interventions
- Analyze data to identify emerging student needs or behavioral trends
- Ensure documentation of accommodations, sanctions, support plans, and outcomes is thorough and compliant
Minimum Qualifications
A master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 8 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field OR Doctorate (Ed.D., Ph.D., or J.D.) in a relevant field
- Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, student conduct, or crisis management
- Experience managing student conduct processes and coordinating crisis response
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team, manage complex situations, and work collaboratively across departments
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $92,956 to $110,000 annually.
