Dental Assistant Supervisor (0199)

This position is responsible for managing and supervising staff who are responsible for the functions of the front desk and dental assisting in Springfield, IL. The position may also work at times as a dental assistant. The incumbent will work closely with dentists, dental hygienists and students. The position will be responsible for the development and implementation of dental assistant training.

Supervision and Indirect Patient Care 51%

  1. Conduct interviews, hire, onboard and train direct reports.
  2. Coordinate and supervise all training for dental assistants.
  3. Manage time reporting and time off requests; bi-weekly, semi-monthly and monthly.
  4. Conduct direct report organizational evaluations and ongoing development and coaching.
  5. Develop, implement, and analyze work requirements to comply with SIU, state and federal rules, regulations and policies.
  6. Assist the site Dental Director with dental laboratory guideline, maintenance and instruction.
  7. Address patient complaints verbally and/or submitted to risk management timely.
  8. Ensure precise and quality dental provider schedules on a daily, weekly, monthly basis.
  9. Schedule patient appointments, same day, emergent and triage patient calls.
  10. Ensure claims are complete in a timely manner and checkouts are completed.
  11. Manage and supervise all inventory and ordering of supplies.
  12. Assist in establishing and implementing clinical best practices.
  13. Ensure staff comply with SIU, state and federal rules, regulations and policies.
  14. Oversee a high level of asepsis in the dental according to OSHA guidelines.
  15. Other duties assigned.

Patient Care 49%

  1. Complete coronal polishing, fluoride varnish, and pit/fissure sealants.
  2. Obtain and coordinate patient consents: DCFS, Procedure, SIU General.
  3. Obtain and coordinate necessary prior authorizations for dental treatment.
  4. Provide Nitrous Oxide per order.
  5. Take diagnostic x-rays of teeth.
  6. Assists with dental procedures.
  7. Apply topical anesthetic.
  8. Sterilize dental instruments and equipment per procedure.
  9. Obtain dental records, update record information accurately.
  10. Educate dental care to patients.
  11. Effectively communicate with patients to guide and organize effective oral health.
  12. Assist the dental hygienist.
  13. Take impressions, pour models, and make crowns.
  14. Complete lab slips and follow up on completion of labs.
  15. Perform duties comparable to those associated with lower levels in the series.
  16. Other duties assigned.

Credentials to be Verified by Placement Officer

  1. Three years (36 months) of work experience in dental assisting comparable to that performed as the Dental Assistant III level of the series; or as an expanded-function dental assistant, or as an oral health counselor.
  2. Current Certification as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), if required by the employing institution.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA's)

  1. Ability to effectively plan, delegate, and supervise the work of others.
  2. Knowledge and techniques needed in dental procedures and medicine pertaining to dental assistance (e.g., knowledge of four-handed dentistry).
  3. Knowledge of the English language's structure and content, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  4. Knowledge of computers to input data, access information, and/or create materials and documents using a variety of clinical software applications.
  5. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  6. Ability to perform functions of administrative and clerical procedures managing files and records, designing forms, and managing inventory.
  7. Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  8. Skill in interpersonal verbal and written communication.
  9. Ability to build rapport with patients.
  10. Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
  11. Ability to remain continuously on task for several hours while sitting, standing, or moving.
  12. Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, confidentiality, and respect when speaking with patients, peers, faculty, and staff.
  13. Ability to help patients feel comfortable before, during, and after dental procedures; communicates appropriately and positively to guide and re-assure patients.

Condition of Employment:

Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, an out-of-state resident who is hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
