Dental Patients Accounts Representative
Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Associate's Degree (foreign equivalent or higher) and one (1) year full-time working experience in public health or related industry such as insurance. In lieu of degree, three (3) years of full-time working experience in public health or related industry such as insurance or a related industry may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual in English and Spanish. Billing, Accounts Receivable, Dental Experience, or hospital patient access/registration experience. Experience working with dental insurance benefits. Experience working with dental terminology. Previous experience as a dental billing/registration representative. Experience working with EMR computerized registration/financial/IT systems.
Brief Description of Duties:
At Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, our Dental Patient Account Representative is responsible for completing varied, diverse and specialized duties to support the Revenue Cycle, Compliance and Patient Experience by accurately and efficiently completing tasks. The Representative is responsible for verifying insurance, working with the patients and providers to create financial treatment plans, collecting patient balances, posting payments in our electronic POS payment system, reconciling payments for bank deposits, and submitting claims to insurance carriers. This role requires professional interaction with all hospital and clinical staff and facilitates a positive experience in all patient encounters. This position is a key representative to the Dental team. The representative interacts in a professional, respectful manner with internal and external customers, provides excellent customer service to patients and visitors. The Representative adheres to strict rules of confidentiality, department, and organizational policies and procedures. Qualified candidates will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, knowledge and understanding of patient care and effectively respond to changing patient needs by making decisions based on ethical principles and adhering to our high standard of excellence. Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication, computing and multi-tasking skills in a fast-paced environment. Candidates must demonstrate experience and expertise in speaking with customers and can work well with persons who are under stress (such as sick patients and their distressed family members).
Duties:
- Verifies insurance, determines eligibility and patient cost share (co-pay / deposit etc.) using electronic systems and other means.
- Obtains complete and accurate patient demographic and insurance information, ensuring data is current and coverage verified to sufficiently meet requirements to generate a "clean" bill.
- Provides financial guidance and excellence in Financial Care to patients and their representatives, presenting information about their benefit coverage and cost share responsibilities.
- Works with Providers to provide treatment plans/payment plans/financial responsibility to patients.
- Responsible to collect and post co-pays, deposits and deductibles at time of patient visit.
- Reviews providers clinical notes to determine if procedure code selected is correct
- Reviews charts and communicate to providers with specific information required to bill claims in a timely manner.
- Submits claims by paper and electronically with proper attachments.
- Ensures that compliance regulations are met (presenting and securing consents and regulatory signatures from patients or designee, essential for treatment and payment, as per procedure).
- Maintains and requires appropriate documents as necessary (i.e. copies of photo ID and insurance documents etc. Witnesses general consents, agreements, and acknowledgements.
- Reconciles petty cash bags to ensure that the issued amount is consistently maintained.
- Communicates professionally with colleagues, patients and answers calls directed to the Cashier Office. Demonstrates a positive organizational attitude and commitment to patient experience. Maintains respectful and compassionate demeanor and provides high-quality patient centered care.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non-Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly. For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas. Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
