Organizational Unit Overview:

The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean for Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.

Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the rural population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. To operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.

Job Duties:

The faculty member of Dental Public Health in the School of Dental Medicine is responsible for development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and research related to public health, epidemiology, behavioral health, health systems and health services research using a community-based participatory approach. Teaching responsibilities center around modules that are housed within a Community Oral Health Practice course that is taught to dental students and integrated across the predoctoral curriculum. Teaching is also provided to the residents in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program and the Pediatric Dentistry program.

The position reports to the Chair of Foundational Sciences through the Division Director of Dental Public Health, and collaborates closely with the Offices of Research, Extramural Affairs, Clinical Affairs, and Dental Education and Informatics to support the Schools programs and initiatives. In addition, the position works closely with the Community Service Learning Centers and other Schools and Colleges of East Carolina University to collaborate on local/regional/national public health and educational topics.

Specific Duties:

Work closely with the Division Director for Dental Public Health, Chair of Foundational Sciences, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, and the Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics in curriculum development and implementation with respect to dental public health as it relates to community and population health, health services delivery, and oral health in particular.

Work closely with the Chair of Foundational Sciences, the Associate Dean for Research, and the Division Director of Dental Public Health in the development and implementation of the clinical and academic components of the electronic dental record (axiUm) to optimize the collection and analysis of clinical data for research purposes. Work closely with the Associate Dean for Dental Education and Informatics to optimize use of technology and align teaching, learning, and assessment with relevant accreditation standards.

Direct and lead teams to advance the science of dental public health. Develop programs to involve dental students, residents, and dental school faculty in research activities and scholarship. Supervise graduate and professional students in research when applicable.

Seek funding and participate in interdisciplinary research to advance oral health integration within population health. Respond to local and national requests for information and documentation related to dental public health program and research activities.

Seek to serve on committees and boards for state/federal government agencies, professional societies and associations. Serve on School committees. Attend meetings and represent the School to external constituencies as requested by the Chair of Foundational Sciences as appropriate.

Perform other duties and assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chair of Foundational Sciences and the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine. Candidates may be considered for tenure-track at the title/rank of Assistant Professor or higher. Appointments are commensurate with education and experience.

Contingent upon available funding.

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers and State Employees Retirement System (TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability.

While this position is not automatically eligible for the NC Teachers and State Employees Retirement System (TSERS), new hires transferring from another North Carolina state agency and current ECU employees transferring internally who had been enrolled in TSERS in their previous employment will continue participation in TSERS. These individuals may be able to elect to participate in ORP if they had not been offered that option at the time of their initial enrollment into TSERS.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • DDS, DMD or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Advanced training and experience in public health.
  • Possession of, or eligibility for, a teaching or regular dental license in North Carolina (a North Carolina dental license must be secured by the time of employment).

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

Possession of, or eligibility for, a teaching or regular dental license in North Carolina (a North Carolina dental license must be secured by the time of employment).

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • Prior clinical experience in a dentistry serving children and/or adults with special healthcare needs.
  • Experience in community-based settings.
  • Success in attracting extramural funding for community based participatory research.
  • Willingness to apply academic experiences of contemporary dental education to the Community Service Learning Center model.
  • Willingness to work in school-based dental care setting up to 2 days per week.
