In compliance with SB 1162, Western University of Health Sciences is providing a pay scale for this position. The pay scale reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position. Within this range, the individual pay is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, and work location. Please note that the compensation details listed reflects the base salary only.
Expected Pay Scale
Minimum: $25,000.00 Annually
Maximum: $25,000.00 Annually
Job Summary
This is a College of Health Sciences Administration-level position within Western University of Health Sciences and is offered in conjunction with a faculty appointment. Together, the administrative role of Department Chair – DPTE (PCN A04177) and the faculty appointment (PCN F02671) comprise a full-time position (1.0 FTE).
The salary range listed in this posting does not represents the total compensation for the combined administrative and faculty responsibilities. Please refer to the corresponding job posting for details on the additional assignment.
The Department Chair is responsible for the administration of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program under the supervision of the Office of the Dean of the College of Health Sciences. The Chair provides leadership and direction in the planning, development, and delivery of the academic programs and in the maintenance of program excellence.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
- Budget planning and balancing.
- Knowledge of current and emerging trends in physical therapy and related fields.
Skills:
- Strong academic leadership. This includes motivation, constructive evaluation, and adjudication.
- Fosters an environment of mutual trust and confidentiality with faculty, staff, and students.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to balance the needs and views of faculty and university administration.
- Excellent time and personnel management skills.
Ability to:
- Demonstrate a commitment to working in an organization that values and promotes humanism.
Required Qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited physical therapy program and has an earned academic doctoral degree, Ph.D., Ed.D., or other advanced academic doctorate in a related field degree.
Experience or Training: Rank: Eligible to hold rank of Associate Professor, Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor. Salary and rank will be based upon documented relevant experience and qualifications.
Licensure: Physical therapist who is licensed/regulated in the state of California/ eligible to be licensed in California.
Preferred Qualifications
- Six years of full-time higher education experience and be able to serve at the level of an Associate or Full Professor.
- Eight years of full-time experience in physical therapy education preferred.
- Applicant must have a record of quality teaching (design and delivery), demonstrated participation in scholarly activities (research), a commitment to institutional and external service, and a regional reputation as an authority in her/his field.

Essential Job Duties
- Partner with DPTE faculty to ensure goals of the program match the strategic vision of the University.
- Lead curriculum development for the DPT program.
- Mentor faculty in continued development of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.
- Provide faculty with clear expectations and constructive feedback in these areas of endeavor.
- Ensure due process in addressing student concerns. Budget development and management.
- Provide excellent teaching in areas of expertise. Maintain scholarship and research program commensurate with accreditation and University standards.
- Maintain professional relationships with local community and broader field of physical therapy.
- Work to finalize and run volunteer clinic.
- Serve the University and College on committees as appointed by the Dean of CHS. Perform other duties as assigned.
