Augusta University's Dental College of Georgia seeks a Department Chair of General Dentistry. The Department Chair's responsibilities include oversight for and/or participation in departmental teaching programs at the pre-doctoral level, research, scholarship, Intramural faculty practice, and administrative leadership for senior student comprehensive care patient experiences in The Dental College of Georgia (DCG). The chair reports directly to the Dean, works collaboratively with all DCG chairs and deans, and demonstrates professional behaviors that promote a positive, productive, and caring environment for all DCG faculty, staff, residents, students, and patients. This is a full-time position with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. This is also a tenured or non-tenure track administrative faculty position.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching - 45%: Participate in the departmental teaching responsibilities. This effort will include lectures, seminars, simulation-laboratories, clinical supervision and related activities at the pre-doctoral level. These responsibilities are primarily associated with the senior-year comprehensive care program.
  • Scholarship - 15%: Engage in research and scholarly activities at a level to provide demonstrable academic achievement such as journal publications and/or invited professional presentations.
  • Service - 10%: Participate in Dental College of Georgia and Augusta University committee activities, and in other professional activities that would bring notoriety and distinction to the incumbent, the Department of General Dentistry and to the DCG.
  • Clinical/Patient Care - 10%: Perform patient care through the intramural practice of the AU Dental Associates in order to maintain practice skills.
  • Administration - 20%: Administrative responsibilities over the Department of General Dentistry providing leadership and guidance to the department in the areas of research, teaching, and service including provision of administrative guidance and direction for curriculum and faculty development.

Required Qualifications

DDS/DMD degree. At least 5 years of experience in dental education and 2 years of experience in a relevant leadership role. Experience with Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) processes for pre-doctoral programs. Experience collaborating with senior administrative leaders in dental schools, universities, and leadership boards/councils for higher education, accrediting, and/or licensing agencies. Significant experiences with professional organizations associated with education, research and/or restorative practice.

Associate Professor - Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Assistant Professor with background, education, and training consistent with the following position requirements.

Professor - Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor with background, education, and training consistent with the following position requirements.

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be: Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)s requirements for institutional accreditation; Evidence of ability as a teacher; Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned; Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and, Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduate degree in business or administration (e.g., MBA, MPA) or a certificate program in business, administrative, or educational management or leadership. At least five (5) years in full-time private practice or the equivalent time in the US armed forces providing a wide range of general/ restorative dental care. Leadership training with higher education focus.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round. The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time. Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds. Rank and salary are determined at the time of hire and are based on a variety of factors including but not limited to experience, education, credentials, specialty, training, etc. while also considering internal equity and market data. Advancement through the faculty ranks at Augusta University is only through the annual Promotion and Tenure process in which faculty may apply if eligible (typically five-year increments).
