Department IT Manager

The Department of Earth Sciences is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced IT Manager to join our IT team to lead the development and execution of the Department's IT vision, ensuring it is secure, forward looking, and aligned with strategic priorities in research, teaching and administration. The role will be responsible for maintaining a resilient and secure IT environment, enabling innovation through the adoption of new technologies. The role holder will work closely with the Department's senior leadership, University Information Services (UIS) and other departments, to shape digital strategy, align infrastructure and promote cross-institutional collaboration.
The role will be hands on, requiring a breadth of technical skill and experience working with a range of technologies across desktop and server management.
The Department is spread over two sites, one on Downing Street in central Cambridge and the other at the Bullard Laboratories in West Cambridge. The role will provide support across both sites and the Institute for Energy and Environmental Flows (IEEF), an interdisciplinary research centre hosted by the Department at West Cambridge, and the Sedgwick Museum, an integral part of the Downing Street site.
You will work closely with both senior and junior members of the team as well as be required to work independently to help update and maintain IT services to meet the changing needs of the department.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leadership of the department's IT team which are located across two sites;
- User support for students, administrative, academic and research staff;
- Linux-based network and systems administration, providing management, support and optimisation of the department IT network;
- Lead infrastructure modernisation and ownership of department-wide IT projects from implementation to rollout;
- Technical assistance with specifying and procuring IT equipment;
- Ownership of cyber security and risk management within the department, ensuring compliance with university policies and national standards.
You will be experienced in IT leadership and management and working at a strategic level to create and deliver change across a department/organisation. Knowledge of Linux infrastructure configuration and support is essential, as is a degree/postgraduate level education/level 6 vocational qualification or equivalent experience. The ability to build relationships at all levels and communicate effectively orally and in writing are required. You should be highly proactive, persuasive and customer-focused, and be able to understand and apply potential new technology to deliver business results.
