Department of Materials Science and Engineering - Open Rank Faculty Search
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MatSE) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign invites applicants for one full-time faculty position in computational and theoretical materials science at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The search will focus on candidates at the tenure-track Assistant Professor rank, however, exceptional candidates at the tenured Associate or Full Professor ranks will also be considered.
At the time of appointment, applicants must hold an earned doctorate in a field related to the position. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. The typical salary range is as follows: $120,000 to $135,000 at the Assistant Professor level, $135,000 to $156,000 at the Associate Professor level, and $156,000 to $200,000 at the Full Professor level, for a 9-month service basis.
The expected start date is August 16, 2026, but this is negotiable. To ensure full consideration, applications must be received by November 24, 2025. Applications will be evaluated as received. Early applications are strongly encouraged, and applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date.
To apply, please create a candidate profile at jobs.illinois.edu. Application packages should include the following materials in a single PDF file in the Resume/CV section: 1) cover letter, 2) curriculum vitae, 3) research statement (suggested 3-4 pages), 4) teaching statement, 5) service statement, and 6) names and contact information for three professional references (reference letters do not need to be included in your application package; they will be requested later). The research, teaching, and service statements offer a chance to share your motivation, approach, experience, leadership, impact, and vision in each area, including how you would support the university’s land-grant mission (boldly.illinois.edu), through campus, community, or professional engagement. For any questions concerning the application process, please send an email to matse@illinois.edu.
