Job Summary/Basic Functions
The Deputy Counsel serves under the general oversight of the Vice President and University Counsel and provides legal counsel to the highest levels of University administration in areas including but not limited to employment, student affairs, athletics, public records, real property, sponsored programs, intellectual property, purchasing, civil rights, contracts, and higher education law.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school
Membership and good standing in a State Bar (KY membership required by date of hire) and must be maintained throughout employment
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of related legal experience, preferably having served in a university or educational setting or experience in the legal areas of contracts, employment and/or higher education law.

Job Duties:
- 65% - Provides legal counsel to senior executives, department leaders, staff and faculty on legal risks and opportunities, ensuring alignment with university goals and policies. - (Essential)
- 15% - Serves as strategic advisor to the Vice President & University Counsel, providing expert legal and professional , advice and innovative solutions on issues affecting the university and the administration of the Counsel's Office - (Essential)
- 10% - Supports the office functions by completing all other duties and special projects as assigned - (Essential)
- 10% - Serves as the institution's required privacy officer under the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Essential Accountability Act (HIPAA), counseling HIPAA-designated entities on compliance obligations, developing and maintaining privacy policies, collaborating with stakeholders to create policies that outline how to handle patient information, including how to access, share, and store it; organizing training of HIPAA-designated units and employees; promptly supporting the investigation and reporting of any breaches of patient information, conducting routine audits and risk assessments - (Essential)
