Deputy Director

THE POSITION
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking an exceptional scientific leader to serve as Deputy Director, Division of Cancer Biology (DCB). DCB supports a national research program focused on the fundamental biological mechanisms of cancer initiation, progression, metastasis, and etiology.
Reporting to the DCB Director, the Deputy Director provides senior scientific and operational leadership and shares responsibility for an extramural portfolio of more than 2,000 grants and cooperative agreements totaling approximately $1.1 billion annually. The incumbent helps establish scientific priorities and strategy; oversees research programs, resources, and workforce planning; advises NCI leadership on scientific, programmatic, and budgetary matters; identifies emerging research opportunities; and represents DCB in collaborations across NIH, government, academia, industry, and the scientific community.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must possess an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in cancer biology or a closely related biomedical discipline and have a distinguished record of scientific achievement and leadership in basic and/or mechanistic cancer research.
Candidates must demonstrate senior-level leadership of complex biomedical research programs or portfolios; broad expertise and scientific vision in cancer biology; strategic planning, resource allocation, and program evaluation experience; and exceptional leadership, communication, and collaboration skills. Knowledge of the extramural research enterprise, including peer review, grants administration, cooperative agreements, and applicable federal policies, is expected. NIH or other federal research funding experience is highly desirable.
