Supports the University of Houston's fire prevention and life safety programs by conducting inspections, enforcing fire codes, reviewing plans, and promoting compliance with applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards, Texas State Fire Marshal mandates, and university-specific safety policies and procedures. Pursuant to the State of Texas Executive Order No. GA-48, this position researches, works on, or has access to critical infrastructure and requires the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the University infrastructure. This position requires personnel be routinely reviewed to determine whether or not criminal history or continuous connections for the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the employee from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure.
- Conducts life safety inspections of interiors and exteriors of University facilities to identify and mitigate fire hazards, ensure efficiency of fire protection systems, and confirm adequacy of fire escapes/egress, emergency signage and exits.
- Prepares detailed inspection reports with clear documentation of deficiencies, corrective actions, and timelines; communicates findings, unsafe conditions, and corrective actions with responsible parties.
- Issues notices of violation(s) for outstanding fire hazards from previous inspections and follows up to verify timely and effective corrective actions.
- Conducts permit inspections and issues permits in compliance with local and state fire safety regulations and University policy.
- Conducts periodic fire hydrant flow test(s) and inspection(s) to ensure readiness.
- Responds to complaints regarding fire hazards and code violations; researches fire code violations and provides direction and/or technical assistance for correction.
- Coordinates and leads fire drills, evacuation exercises, and fire prevention programs to educate faculty, staff, students, and contractors.
- Reviews fire protection plans and building plans for applicable code compliance, advises of required changes, and approves completed plans.
- Conducts acceptance test of fire alarm systems, sprinklers, extinguishers, suppression systems, and related life safety systems; coordinates compliance with contractors and vendors.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
MQ: Requires specialized training in basic trades, principles, procedures, practice, routines or techniques in a specific area or trade which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required. Requires a minimum of three (3) years of directly job-related experience.
