James Cook University (JCU) is seeking a visionary academic leader to take on the role of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academy. This is a rare opportunity to shape the academic future of a university uniquely positioned to address the challenges and opportunities of the Tropics. As Australia’s only institution founded with a mission to serve Northern Australia and tropical regions globally, JCU is deeply committed to sustainability, reconciliation, and delivering transformative education and research.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academy (DVCA) is a senior executive role reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor. The DVCA leads the Academy, which includes all Colleges and Pathway programs, and is responsible for driving academic excellence, innovation, and strategic alignment across the University. This role is central to ensuring that JCU’s academic enterprise is fully integrated with its Strategic Intent and performance expectations.

As a member of the University Executive, the DVCA plays a key role in shaping institutional strategy, policy, and vision. The successful candidate will provide leadership across teaching, research, and engagement, fostering a high-performance culture that supports student success and positions JCU as a global leader in tropical research and education. The DVCA will work closely with College Deans to deliver student-centred curricula, build collaborative research initiatives, and strengthen internal and external partnerships.

This role demands a dynamic and experienced leader with a strong academic background, proven capability in leading change, and a deep understanding of the higher education landscape. The DVCA will be a champion of innovation in learning and teaching, committed to continuous improvement and excellence. They will also represent JCU in building strategic alliances with industry, government, and community organisations, enhancing the University’s reputation locally and internationally.

Joining JCU means becoming part of a university that values excellence, authenticity, integrity, and respect. It is a chance to lead with purpose, contribute to a sustainable future, and make a lasting impact in a region of global significance.
