About the Project

Summary of the proposed research:

Achieving net-zero energy buildings (NZEBs) is essential for reducing global carbon emissions and advancing sustainable architecture. This PhD project aims to develop innovative design strategies for net-zero buildings by integrating renewable energy systems (solar, wind, geothermal) with energy storage technologies, building performance optimisation, and sustainable construction materials. The research will focus on creating a comprehensive design framework that balances energy production, consumption, and storage while ensuring occupant comfort, functionality, and cost-effectiveness.

The project will explore the potential of various renewable energy sources, including photovoltaic (PV) systems, small-scale wind turbines, and ground-source heat pumps, in the context of both new and retrofitted buildings. It will assess how these systems can be optimally integrated with energy-efficient building technologies, such as advanced insulation, smart windows, and energy-efficient HVAC systems, to minimise the energy demand of the building.

Energy storage solutions, such as battery systems and thermal storage, will also be studied to improve energy reliability and ensure continuous building operation during periods of low energy generation. The project will employ advanced simulation tools to model building energy performance under various climatic conditions and operational scenarios, identifying optimal design configurations for different building types.

Additionally, the research will evaluate the economic feasibility of NZEB designs by conducting lifecycle cost analyses and exploring policy implications for the widespread adoption of net-zero buildings. The outcome of this research will provide actionable insights for architects, engineers, and policymakers, supporting the global push toward sustainable, energy-efficient buildings.

The expected start dates are January and April 2026.

Entry Requirements:

Applicants should have a First- or Upper Second-Class UK honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline such Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering. An MSc with Distinction or Merit in a relevant subject is highly desirable. Knowledge or experience in chemical reaction engineering, process simulation, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling and optimisation would be advantageous.

The standard minimum IELTS Academic requirement is 6.5 overall with no less than 6.0 in each band. Some International students are also required to meet UKVI requirements for the appropriate study visa. A valid ATAS certificate (where required) must be secured as a prerequisite to enrolment.
