Diabetes Educator (Open Rank) CDCES/RN/RD
Job Summary
The Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes Adult Clinic at the University of Colorado Denver is a multi-disciplinary diabetes center affiliated with the University of Colorado, School of Medicine. The patient population is primarily adults aged 18 and above with Type1 Diabetes but also includes occasional patients with Type 2 Diabetes. In addition to the clinical program, the Barbara Davis Center has a large research program allowing many ongoing educational opportunities. This Instructor of Clinical Practice - Senior Instructor of Clinical Practice position is an at-will faculty appointment. This position will provide diabetes care for newly diagnosed and established adults who have Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes. This appointment will also require involvement in research studies. This is a full-time position involving clinical care and pharmaceutical research. Schedule primarily falls Monday - Friday, but occasional weekend or extended hours are required for research studies.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide diabetes education and follow up to newly diagnosed and established adults who have Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, including education and follow up to new insulin pump patients and pregnant patients. Includes:
- Educate patients and families on:
- Diabetes types and disease progression
- Blood glucose monitoring techniques
- Insulin and non-insulin medications
- Carbohydrate counting and meal planning
- Exercise and lifestyle modifications
- Management of hypo- and hyperglycemia
- Strategies for preventing short- and long-term complications
- Use of diabetes technologies such as: Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), Insulin pumps and Automated Insulin Delivery systems
- Educate patients and families on:
- Phone consultations with patients, nurses, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants and physicians in the community
- Determine appropriate options in resolving complicated inquiries and/or issues related to diabetes management
- Coordinate and contribute to research protocols involving insulins, glucose meters, insulin pumps and medications used to manage diabetes
- Charting/data entry in EMR Educate patients, families, and extended families in diabetes management
- Maintain high standards of existing ADA accredited diabetes program
Work Location
Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, Colorado.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
This is an open rank position and could be categorized as Instructor of Clinical Practice or Senior Instructor of Clinical Practice based on experience and qualifications as indicated below:
Instructor of Clinical Practice:
- Master's degree in nursing or related field
- Registered Nurse or Registered Dietitian
- A bachelor's degree and years of experience may be substituted for a Master's Degree.
Sr. Instructor of Clinical Practice:
- Master's degree in nursing or related field
- Registered Nurse or Registered Dietitian
- Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES)
- 5+ years of experience working in diabetes care
- A bachelor's degree and years of experience may be substituted for a Master's Degree.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES)
- Experience working with the psychological and social aspects of living with diabetes.
- Previous clinical and research experience
- Knowledge of and experience working with Type 1 Diabetes
- Phlebotomy and IV skills

Anticipated Pay Range
The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:
Instructor of Clinical Practice: $79,000 - $87,000
Sr. Instructor of Clinical Practice: $87,000 - $95,000
