Director, Applied Sport Science & Sports Performance Coach
Job Summary
The Director of Applied Sport Science & Sports Performance Coach provides leadership and integration of sport science, data analytics, and performance technology to enhance student-athlete health, development, and competitive success. This role is a key contributor to the department's high-performance model, combining applied sport science oversight with direct strength and conditioning responsibilities for assigned sport program(s). The position supports department-wide performance analytics initiatives, with an emphasis on Olympic sports, and delivers data-driven insights to inform coaching, training, recovery, and recruiting strategies.
Core Responsibilities
- Designs, implements, and supervises comprehensive year-round strength and conditioning programs for assigned sport program(s).
- Leads and integrates applied sport science initiatives, including athlete monitoring, workload management, and performance assessment.
- Develops and manages performance data systems, dashboards, and reporting tools to support Olympic sports and department-wide initiatives.
- Analyzes performance and wellness data and partners with coaching staff to apply insights to training, game preparation, and student-athlete development.
- Partners with sports medicine, nutrition, and performance staff to support injury risk reduction, return-to-play protocols, and holistic student-athlete development.
- Evaluates, implements, and manages performance technologies (e.g., GPS, wearables, force plates, video, and analytics platforms).
- Supports video, statistical, and opponent analysis initiatives, including scouting models and recruiting analytics.
- Provides education and training to coaches and staff on data literacy, analytics tools, and evidence-based practices.
- Assists in supervision of performance facilities, including weight room operations, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols.
- Provides guidance and oversight to graduate assistants, interns, and student workers; may assist in leading sport science personnel.
- Maintains consistent communication with sport coaches and sports medicine staff regarding athlete status and performance planning.
- Ensures compliance with all NCAA, conference, and institutional policies and procedures.
- Serves as a strategic resource to athletic leadership on sport science and performance analytics initiatives.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
- CPR and Basic First Aid Certification.
- Nationally accredited strength and conditioning certification (e.g., CSCS or equivalent).
- Three (3) years of related work experience.
- This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree from an accredited institution.
- Experience at the Division I Collegiate Level
