Director, Athletics & Physical Education
Characteristic Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Administration
- Provide direction, vision, and leadership for a comprehensive athletics and physical education program aligned with Bryn Mawr’s educational philosophy and strategic priorities.
- Manage departmental operations, including budgeting, staffing, programming, facilities oversight, risk management, and policy development.
- Ensure compliance with NCAA Division III, Centennial Conference, and institutional policies and regulations.
- Develop and implement short- and long-term strategic plans that enhance competitive success, student well-being, and institutional reputation.
Student Experience, Wellness & Physical Education
- Oversee the physical education curriculum and ensure it reflects best practices in pedagogy, inclusive instruction, and student well-being.
- Lead the development of a comprehensive recreation and wellness strategy that promotes health and well-being for all Bryn Mawr students in close partnership with the College’s Wellness Program, Health Services, and Counseling Services; ensuring an inclusive, coordinated, and holistic approach to student well-being including and beyond varsity athletics.
- Design inclusive recreational, movement, and wellness opportunities that support physical, mental, and emotional well-being across the student population in collaboration with the College’s Wellness Program, Health Services, and Counseling services.
- Foster a supportive environment that prioritizes academic success, leadership development, and the personal growth of student-athletes.
Athletics Program Oversight
- Supervise and mentor coaches and staff across all varsity sports, club sports, and recreational programs.
- Support a competitive Division III program focused on excellence, integrity, and the student-athlete experience.
- Lead efforts in recruiting, retaining, and developing student-athletes in alignment with the College’s academic standards and values.
- Collaborate with campus partners (e.g., Academic Support, Advising, Student Life, Health & Wellness) to enhance student-athlete success and leadership pathways.
Community Engagement & Collaboration
- Serve as a visible ambassador for athletics and physical education, representing the College internally and externally.
- Cultivate strong relationships with faculty, staff, students, alumnae/i, the Centennial Conference, and external partners.
- Partner with Communications and Advancement to elevate the visibility of athletics, support fundraising initiatives, and strengthen community and alumnae/i engagement.
Facilities, Operations & Risk Management
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and scheduling of athletics and recreation facilities, ensuring they meet safety and accessibility standards.
- Lead athletic risk management initiatives, including emergency planning, compliance training, and staff development. Collaborate with Bryn Mawr’s risk officer, as appropriate.
- Work with campus operations and capital planning on facility enhancements and long-term infrastructure needs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree in athletics administration, education, sports management, or a related field preferred.
- At least 10 years of progressive leadership experience in athletics administration, physical education, or related fields required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA Division III rules, regulations, and best practices.
- Experience in a liberal arts, residential, or women’s college environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to gender equity, diversity, inclusion, and student development.
- Strong administrative, communication, and organizational skills with a collaborative leadership style.
- A record of successful staff management, with the ability to recruit, lead, motivate, and retain talent.
- Demonstrated experience with program development and budget management.
- Experience teaching physical education or overseeing curricular programs.
- Successful completion of satisfactory background checks required.
