Director, Career Development
Schwarzman Scholars seeks an entrepreneurial and experienced leader to serve as its Director of Career Development, based in Beijing, China.
Schwarzman Scholars is a one-year, fully funded master’s degree program in global affairs housed at Schwarzman College on the campus of Tsinghua University in Beijing (ranked first in Asia), designed to build a global community of future leaders equipped to tackle issues and solve problems on the world stage. It is the first scholarship program created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century. Its program focuses on three pillars in and out of the classroom: leadership, global affairs, and China, rooted in the view that, as China’s role in global trends continues to grow, the success of future leaders in any sector depends upon an immersive understanding of the country and its impact on global affairs.
The Schwarzman Scholars experience encompasses unique opportunities inside and outside the classroom, providing Scholars with extensive leadership training, a network of senior mentors, opportunities to engage in high-level interactions with Chinese leaders and visiting speakers, optional internships, career development guidance, and deep-dive travel seminars around China. An international cohort of approximately 150 Scholars each year study leadership, global affairs, and China’s importance on the global stage through a rigorous and dynamic core curriculum, delivered by world-class faculty and guest speakers. Currently, there are 33 visiting international faculty and 22 Chinese faculty (the majority from Tsinghua University) teaching in the program. The Schwarzman Scholars program readies young leaders for careers in which they will join a growing alumni network of professionals who are working to foster dialogue, tackle global challenges, and build global understanding in a wide range of sectors and industries.
The Director of Career Development will lead a small, high-functioning, bilingual and multicultural team that plays a vital role across the Schwarzman Scholar experience and is a core part of the program’s mission and vision. Team members are based in Beijing and New York, and the Career Development Director manages the work that readies Scholars for post-graduate endeavors and provides the foundation for Scholars’ ongoing relationship with the alumni network and the continuation of their leadership trajectories.
Scholars begin their engagement with the Career Development team upon admission to the program and continue to engage throughout the duration of their year at the College and for up to one full year after graduation. The team prepares Scholars to pursue professional opportunities and supports Scholars’ pursuits for further graduate education, entrepreneurship, and other professional endeavors.
The Director will also engage regularly with the Director of Global Alumni Engagement to identify opportunities to share experiences, information, connections, and employment possibilities for current Scholars and recent alumni.
The Director of Career Development will have the flexibility to focus on a small student population and the autonomy to design programs that reflect student needs. This role represents an opportunity for an experienced team leader to spend quality time coaching and delivering programs to Scholars, complemented by strong databases and other career resources. The ideal candidate for this position is a resourceful self-starter, team player, culturally competent, adept at navigating global perspectives and ideologies, and able to move seamlessly between strategy and execution across the coaching, programming, employer engagement and operations functions.
Schwarzman Scholars is assisted by Meghan Ashbrock, Jane Xing, and Jackie Zavitz of Heidrick & Struggles, the international executive search firm. Suggestions of potential candidates, nominations, and applications can be directed to SchwarzmanCareer@heidrick.com.
