Department: Retriever Integrated Health (RIH) brings together UMBC’s Health Services and Counseling Center in a collaborative, holistic approach to support student well-being and academic success. Our interdisciplinary team includes compassionate administrative staff and skilled professionals from a wide range of fields—medicine, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, counseling, social work, health education, dietetics, acupuncture, and massage therapy. Together, we provide comprehensive, student-centered care designed to help the UMBC community thrive.

Position Overview: The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Retriever Integrated Health is seeking a Director of Health Operations. The Director of Health Operations will be responsible for ensuring the overall effectiveness, quality, and continuous improvement of RIH services, operations, and programs. Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice President for Health & Wellbeing, this position will focus on key areas, including emergency management, quality improvement, compliance with regulations, accreditation standards, healthcare operations, and enhancing the business model of RIH.

Responsibilities:

  • Healthcare Operations & Business Model Improvement: Support the AVP, Health & Wellbeing in refining and improving healthcare operations within RIH, ensuring services are provided in a cost-effective, sustainable manner while maintaining high standards of care. Contribute to the strategic planning and implementation of business models that enhance the financial health of RIH, including revenue generation strategies, cost containment, and resource optimization. Work closely with financial officers to assess and track financial performance, identifying opportunities for operational efficiencies and cost-saving measures.
  • Compliance & Accreditation: Ensure RIH complies with all relevant regulatory, accrediting, and licensing bodies (e.g., regional accreditation including AAAHC, HIPAA, FERPA, etc.). Lead the preparation of documentation and reporting for accreditation processes, ensuring all policies, procedures, and practices meet or exceed accreditation standards. Coordinate internal audits and compliance checks to monitor adherence to established regulations, report findings, and recommend corrective actions as needed.
  • Quality Improvement (QI): Lead and oversee RIH’s quality improvement initiatives to enhance the delivery of integrated health, counseling, and health promotion services. Identify areas for improvement by analyzing service delivery data, student feedback, and industry best practices. Collaborate with RIH leadership and staff to implement strategies to improve clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and operational efficiency.
  • Policy Development: Lead the development, implementation, and review of policies related to mental health safety, including protocols for responding to mental health crises, suicide prevention, and the integration of mental health services with overall student health services. Create and update policies that govern the delivery of student health services, including access to care, confidentiality, student rights and responsibilities, and adherence to regulatory standards. Collaborate with university stakeholders, including counseling services, public safety, and student affairs, to ensure that policies support a holistic and integrated approach to student health and well-being.
  • Collaboration & Campus Engagement: Work collaboratively with university partners, including student affairs, academic departments, campus safety, counseling services, and other health and wellness organizations, to support an integrated approach to student care. Lead or participate in campus committees focused on health and wellness initiatives, emergency preparedness, and policy development.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education Required: Bachelor’s degree required in Public Health, Healthcare Administration, Nursing, or a related field.
  • Experience Required: Minimum of 5 years of experience in healthcare operations, quality improvement, emergency management, or related roles, preferably in a higher education or student health setting. Demonstrated experience with accreditation processes and regulatory compliance in a healthcare or institutional setting. Proven record of accomplishment of successful project management and data-driven decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with financial management and business modeling in a healthcare or student services context is highly desirable. Strong knowledge of healthcare operations, quality improvement frameworks, and emergency management protocols. Expertise in regulatory compliance, including HIPAA, FERPA, and other relevant regulations. Strong analytical skills, with the ability to analyze complex data and translate it into actionable insights. Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across departments and with diverse stakeholders. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to drive innovation and change while maintaining a student-centered approach to service delivery.

Salary: $116,000 - $130,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
