Description
Serves as a leader within the Internal Auditing Department, responsible for the oversight and management of audit projects and across the University of Houston and their assigned University of Houston System (UHS) institution. Under minimal supervision, this position ensures that all audit work is planned, performed, and completed in accordance with required professional auditing standards. Reports to Internal Auditing Department leadership on the implementation of the annual audit plan, key findings, and departmental initiatives. Supervises audit staff; assigning and monitoring audit projects to ensure timely completion and compliance with professional standards; assisting in the maintenance of the audit management system; and overseeing the quality, accuracy, and completeness of audit documentation. This role also manages administrative duties such as approving timesheets, conducting performance evaluations, and supporting the professional development of staff. The position collaborates with other audit directors to promote consistency and alignment across the department and reports directly to Internal Auditing leadership regarding the status and execution of the annual audit plan, significant audit findings, and the implementation of departmental initiatives and priorities.
- Serves as liaison for their assigned UHS university and may serve as liaison to external auditors performing work for the UHS Internal Auditing Department.
- Oversees the planning, execution, and completion of complex audits across financial, operational, compliance, and information technology areas, ensuring alignment with professional auditing standards and departmental quality assurance requirements for all UHS universities.
- Supervises audit staff, assigning projects, monitoring progress, reviewing work for accuracy and completeness, and providing coaching, guidance, and performance evaluations.
- Maintains oversight of the audit plan's implementation, ensuring timely completion of audit engagements and effective use of resources while tracking status.
- Directs and leads audit planning activities, including risk assessment, development of work programs, and determination of audit scope, methodology, and staff assignments.
- Reviews and approves audit reports and related documentation, ensuring quality, consistency, and clarity of findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Evaluates the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls, identifies control weaknesses, and recommends improvements to promote accountability, compliance, and operational efficiency.
- Champions the use of data-driven auditing techniques, including the application of data analytics, continuous auditing, artificial intelligence, automation tools, and other computer-aided auditing tools (CAATs) to enhance audit effectiveness and insight.
- Directs and performs complex data analysis to identify trends, anomalies, and risks, and integrates results into audit planning, testing, and reporting.
- Coordinates special projects, investigations, and systemwide compliance reviews, ensuring adherence to federal guidelines, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies.
- Collaborates with other directors and internal audit leadership to support strategic initiatives, promote consistency in audit practices, and communicate results to stakeholders.
- Performs other job-related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications (MQ)
Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. Knowledge of the discipline is normally obtained through a formal, directly job-related 4 year degree from a college or university or an equivalent in-depth specialized training program that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Requires a minimum of five (5) years of directly job-related experience. Requires professional licensing, certification or registration directly related to the job, as specified on a job description addendum.
