Director of BSW Practicum Education and Open-Rank Fixed-Term Faculty
Position Summary
The School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for an open rank fixed-term faculty position (12-month). This position includes a dual appointment: 50% effort dedicated as the Director of BSW Practicum Education and 50% effort directed as a Practicum Education Faculty. This position will be reviewed annually for reappointment.
In the Director of BSW Practicum Education role (50%), the faculty member will provide strategic and operational leadership for the BSW practicum program. As part of a newly developing degree, the Director will play a pivotal role in establishing the vision, structure, and infrastructure for practicum education, ensuring alignment with CSWE accreditation standards, university policies, and best practices in social work education. Key responsibilities include developing practicum manuals, procedures, and assessment tools; recruiting, onboarding, and supporting agency partners to expand placement opportunities; and designing orientation and training processes for students, practicum instructors, and faculty. These efforts will ensure the development of a strong, well-integrated practicum program for the BSW.
The Director of BSW Practicum Education will also oversee the placement process, agency partnerships, and student matching, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and university policies and leading efforts to assess and improve practicum outcomes and student learning. The Director will collaborate closely with the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education faculty, and staff to align practicum education with curricular goals, and will represent the BSW practicum program in school-wide and university-wide committees and initiatives. This role requires strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills; demonstrated experience in scholarship, curriculum development, and administration; and a clear commitment to equity and excellence in undergraduate social work education.
In the Practicum Education Faculty role (50%), the faculty member will coordinate practicum education across social work practice areas, supporting the development, implementation, and evaluation of practicum placements for BSW students. Responsibilities include teaching practicum-related courses and seminars, collaborating with practicum instructors, agencies, and faculty to ensure high-quality learning experiences, and advising students to support their professional development in practicum settings. Ideal candidates will have broad social work practice experience with individuals, families, groups, communities, or organizations; experience in practicum education, including supervision and curriculum development; and an MSW degree with either an LCSW or macro-level practice background. Demonstrated ability to teach and train at the undergraduate and graduate level is preferred. This portion of the role includes a standard distribution of effort: 90% teaching and instruction, and 10% service and community engagement.
We are seeking applicants with a breadth of social work practice experience and expertise and the ability to teach across undergraduate and graduate social work curriculum. Experience working in practicum education is strongly preferred. Applicants should be able to demonstrate skills and experience in teaching social work coursework or training. This non-tenured position is responsible for coordinating practicum education in the undergraduate social work program, as well as teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses.
