The Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts School of Music at the University of Oklahoma (Norman, OK) invites applications for the position of Director of Concert Bands. We seek a dynamic, visionary leader with a strong record of artistic excellence and a commitment to preparing the next generation of performers and educators.
The OU band program is nationally recognized for musical distinction, commissioning new works from leading composers, and fostering a spirit of collaboration across the profession. The successful candidate will join a team of dedicated music faculty committed to artistic innovation, student success, and community engagement.
Responsibilities:
Conducting responsibilities include conducting the OU Wind Symphony and additional ensembles according to the needs of the School of Music and the abilities of the candidate. Teaching responsibilities will include graduate courses in conducting, wind literature, and special topics. Undergraduate courses may include courses in conducting.
Administrative responsibilities include the oversight of all aspects of the concert band program, and graduate conducting program, including recruitment, teaching, mentoring, and dissertation guidance. Additionally, the Director of Concert Bands serves as the primary liaison with the School of Music Wind and Percussion Area, coordinating recruiting and outreach activities to prospective students as well as major ensemble auditions and placements for current students.
The Director of Concert Bands’ research and creative activity shall include exemplary musical performances as a conductor, clinician, and lecturer to include presentation, publication, and/or performance at national and international levels.
All School of Music faculty members are expected to contribute to the profession and university through creative activity and service. For conductors, a regional presence and national reputation for high quality musical performance is expected. Active participation in recruitment, fundraising, and public relations activities is expected, including but not limited to maintaining a positive relationship with public school music educators in Oklahoma and surrounding states, as well as University of Oklahoma administration, athletics, alumni, and recruitment services. The successful candidate will join a team of conductors and faculty who work closely together on musical, academic, and educational matters for the benefit of our students. The School of Music seeks a candidate who will demonstrate exemplary communication skills, collegiality, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual life of the University. Participation in faculty service activities, including committee work, is expected. Additional responsibilities will be determined according to the needs of the School of Music.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:
- Completed doctorate in wind conducting. Demonstrated success as an outstanding musician, conductor, and educator, with significant experience in all facets of an active college band program. Demonstrated success as a recruiter of both graduate and undergraduate students. Proven track record of regional and national research and creative activity. A minimum of two years successful public school instrumental teaching experience at the secondary level.

- Demonstrated ability to build relationships with public school music educators. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with leading composers. Demonstrated ability to relate to and work well with a broad student population. Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with other departments within the College and the University.
