Job Description Summary:

The Director of Cultural Engagement & Enrichment will be responsible for a broad scope of programs, trainings, support structures and initiatives, as well as advising, mentoring, and collaborating with cultural clubs, units, and organizations in support of the mission of the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Mission Integration, with particular emphasis on supporting the success and engagement of the University of La Verne (ULV) diverse student population.

The primary duties for this position include directing all aspects of support including strategic planning, student success, advising, and center operations which includes implementing, evaluating, and advocating for the creation of support structures to more fully engage and support our historically marginalized communities, with a particular focus on Black/African American students and the Give Something Back (GSB) Scholars.

To this end, the Director will have a proven record of leading, supporting, planning, implementing, evaluating, and advocating for program initiatives in support of the Black/African American, Latina/o, Foster Youth, LGBTQ and other marginalized communities. The programmatic initiatives in support of Black students will include but not be limited to advising of the Black Student Union, creation of a Black Scholars Advisory Board, summer bridge program, etc.; inclusive of creating a programmatic initiative for family engagement and ULV employee training and development.

Additionally, the Director will lead programming and work directly in close collaboration and support of the cultural clubs and organizations on campus; co-directing multicultural graduations and leading monthly cultural programming including convening and leading planning committees; attending and participating in various departmental, divisional and other appropriate campus-wide meetings; assessing all programmatic initiatives and contributing to end-of-year reports; supervise grad intern assistants; budget management; managing of program software related to program planning, implementation, and evaluation as well as social media; creating and maintaining program files and other related duties as assigned by the AVP of Inclusive Excellence & Mission integration to assist in the managing of the daily operations connected to running the Center for Multicultural Services and the student employees.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of four years experience, at a professional level, working in a higher education multicultural office/center having served historically marginalized students, with a proven record of creating and supporting successful Black student initiatives.
  • Knowledge of and proven ability to work with historically marginalized communities. A keen understanding of the Black/African American, Latina/o, and LGBTQ community with a record of effective engagement and creation of support structures in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge and ability to lead diverse communities in a human relations growth process. Again, with an understanding of the identity development needs of various marginalized communities.
  • Experience engaging across diverse populations, entities, organizations, communities, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference for person who has worked a minimum of 4 years, as a professional, in a higher education multicultural office/center having served historically marginalized students and their family (parents), and has a proven record of success creating and supporting Black student initiatives.
  • Experience having lead or participated in campus-wide human relations/diversity retreats.
  • Having created innovative programs to increase retention and graduation rates for African American, Latina/o, Pacific Islander, Native American, first generation and other marginalized student groups. To have worked directly with parents and included them in the learning enterprise.
  • Coursework in identity development theory, life span, critical pedagogy, critical race theory, or history of race and oppression in the United States is desirable.
  • Master’s degree, preferably in the areas of: Education, Psychology, Sociology, Human Relations, Liberal Studies, Leadership and Management or a related field. Sociology, Human Relations, Liberal Studies, Leadership and Management or a related field.

Specific Duties:

  • Directs from inception to completion programs, support structures, and leadership training opportunities for historically marginalized communities, with a particular focus on Black/African American students including the creation of a Black Scholars Advisory Board, summer bridge program, social justice leaders program, Pan-African theme hall, academic advising, etc. to raise levels of engagement, active leadership, and overall success of students; to advocate at every level for the full inclusion and success of these students. (Percentage of Time: 40%)
  • Serves as the advisor of the Black Student union.
  • Leads community building and leadership development efforts for students via engagement and visibility across campus.
  • Coordinates efforts across academic and student affairs to broaden collaborations and support academic programs and progress (Path to Progress, College Success Series, Access Program, etc.)
  • Works alongside Civic and Community Engagement colleagues to launch engagement efforts beyond the campus community to assist in recruitment and retainment of diverse student population.
  • Work closely with student affinity clubs and organizations to increase engagement, collaboration, active leadership representation, and visibility, and to encourage campus-wide collaborative programming with other clubs and organizations and creates and oversees the recruitment, placement, advising, programming, and retention of the Living Learning Black Scholars and assists with the Living Learning Latinx Scholars. (Percentage of Time: 20%)
  • Oversees the recruitment, placement, advising, and programming of the Give Something Back Scholars (GSB). Meeting weekly with students and GSB staff to meet the needs of the scholars. (Percentage of Time: 10%)
  • Works closely with the student affairs team, including Student Conduct, Residence Life, Student Outreach and Support, Accessibility Services, and Office of Student Engagement and Leadership to have a pulse on the needs of students and make sure students are aware of resources on campus via CARE Team which requires ongoing case management. (Percentage of Time: 10%)
  • Leads, plans, and implements monthly cultural/heritage awareness programming and cultural celebrations. Convene and lead cultural/heritage month/semester calendar planning committees. Support campus-wide Human Relations/Diversity Retreats or workshops whether on-campus or multi-day off-campus residential format inclusive of ongoing training and development for reslife students and staff. (Percentage of Time: 5%)
  • Manages and coordinates the day-to-day operations/usage/access of the Center for Multicultural Services, and the second-floor Collaboration Room in the Ludwick Center. Including supervising office team and grad interns hired to assist in the implementation of Centers’ programs. (Percentage of Time: 10%)
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned. (Percentage of Time: 5%)

Salary Range Maximum: $82,596.92 Minimum: $82,596.92

The offered wage or salary is only one aspect of an employee’s total compensation.
