The role of University Advancement is to engage the alumni and friends of the University in ways that are meaningful to them. The Director of Development is a member of the University Advancement team that focuses on major gift fundraising for assigned areas of the University at the direction of the Associate Vice President of University Advancement based upon the University's identified objectives. The University Advancement unit has had successive record fundraising years through a strategy of 'donor focused; data driven' efforts.
This position requires an outgoing personality with high integrity, outstanding work ethic, intellectual bandwidth, and the ability to engage people easily. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who is able to work as a teammate in collaborative efforts as well as be responsible for meeting weekly, monthly, and annual goals.
This position is responsible for the overall leadership, management, execution, and follow-up of the University's fundraising (development) efforts. The Director of Development reports directly to the Associate Vice President of University Advancement and works closely with other University leaders as appropriate (including University Cabinet members, Deans, and Directors as applicable.)
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree plus four years of advanced professional experience in a content-specific field or an equivalent combination of post-secondary training, education and/or advanced professional experience.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.
- Demonstrated track record of success in goal-setting and measurable achievement and follow-up.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Professional experience in one or more of the following areas: Non-profit administration, fundraising, alumni affairs, public relations, sales and promotions, marketing, or a related field in order to acquire skills necessary to administer, coordinate and/or participate in a variety of fundraising activities.
- Strong planning skills and the ability to implement strategic plans, including demonstrated ability to use research tools (such as donor profile information) to create plans.
- Ability to travel throughout the community, state, and country, with occasional (estimated 3 nights monthly) overnight travel.
Preferred Qualification
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
- Master's degree plus three years of advanced professional experience in a content-specific field.
- Demonstrated negotiating and closing skills.
- Fundraising or sales experience preferred.
- Ability to serve as credible expert for policies, procedures, and practice in non-profit fundraising on behalf of the University.
- Ability to interpret charitable gift and tax laws for prospects, remain abreast of legislation regarding these laws.
- Working knowledge of rules and regulations of 501c(3) restrictions and laws.
- Strong presentation, writing, editing and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to be a positive contributing member of multiple teams at once.
Other Requirements
Valid driver's license. The University will sponsor many evening and weekend events (Scholarship Dinners, Executive Lectures, alumni events, etc.) Frequent attendance and participation is expected. Travel around the community, state, and country, with occasional overnight travel, are required. Work safely at all times, which includes but is not limited to, participating and completing all required safety trainings, as well as performing all job tasks in accordance with Minnesota State University, Mankato policies and procedures utilizing appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.
