The Director of Finance serves as both budget director and controller, ensures proper management of HDS resources and financial planning through day-to-day financial management, budget and accounting oversight. The position plays a key role in the annual budget process and multi-year financial plans as well as the quarterly accounting reports. It serves as an advisor to HDS department heads, manages departmental budget meetings and is the main contact for budget and financial policy related questions and issues. This is a fully benefits-eligible six-month term position, with the possibility of extension or transition into an ongoing role.

Financial Administration and Operations:

  • Manage financial operations and administration including financial reporting, compliance, ensure application of financial policies, data analysis, development of systems and review and approval of accounting transactions.
  • Ensure internal control activities are followed according to University policy in accounting, budgeting and financial reporting areas.
  • Serve as the liaison within and between departments and the University to provide comprehensive financial analysis and budget management.
  • Lead the quarterly review data process as required by central administration’s Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) office; Perform flux analysis of Actuals to Actuals and Budget to Actual.
  • Identify potential operational challenges and propose solutions. Manage the development and implementation of operational policies, procedures and training for financial staff.
  • Provides support for sponsored research budget preparation and post-award activity management.

Financial Planning and Analysis:

  • Lead quarterly and annual budget planning and multi-year forecasting to assist with overall departmental financial planning.
  • Develop specialized reporting and analyses for use in financial planning.
  • Act as an advisor to department managers and staff.
  • Analyze metrics and identify opportunities to streamline processes; develop and implement plans for improved procedures.
  • Evaluate departmental financial policies and procedures, recommend improvements.

Management:

  • Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment.
