Director of First-Year Writing Program and Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

Position Title: Director of First-Year Writing Program and Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

Suffolk University invites full-time faculty to apply for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor and Director of First-Year Writing, beginning July 1, 2026.

We seek a candidate with an appropriate terminal degree in a discipline represented within Suffolk’s College of Arts and Sciences, where substantial expertise in first-year writing and composition is demonstrated through the candidate’s teaching, administrative experience, and/or research profile. The successful candidate will be appointed as a tenure-track professor within the home department appropriate to their field of professional expertise.

The director will administer the day-to-day activity of an established First-Year writing program, which runs over 100 sections annually. The successful candidate will provide idea leadership and support for curriculum development and delivery, particularly in relation to first-year experience, retention, and AI. The successful candidate will serve on college, university, and departmental committees, and will provide expertise in composition pedagogy to faculty and students across disciplines. The director will also be expected to maintain an ongoing program of research consistent with the expectations of their home department. The teaching load is 2/1 and will consist of first-year composition courses with potential opportunities to teach other first-year and upper-level undergraduate courses within the candidate’s area of expertise. Service and leadership responsibilities include organizing workshops and symposia geared toward composition pedagogy, overseeing placement in writing courses, assessing and evaluating the writing program, collaborating with leaders in the college and university on retention efforts, and representing the writing program in close collaborations with other schools, departments and programs. Additional desirable areas of expertise may include (but are not limited to) curricular assessment, developmental writing, digital literacies, first-year experience, writing across the disciplines, international and multilingual literacies, first-generation college writing, experiential learning, and student success.

Not sure this is you? Contact us to find out! Research indicates that women and members of under-represented groups tend not to apply to jobs when they think they do not meet every qualification, when, in fact, they often do. Suffolk University is dedicated to a building a diverse and inclusive academic community. Familiarity with and experience using pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, socio-economic, neurodiverse and ability groups to reach their maximum potential is a valuable qualification.

Please submit the following materials: Cover letter; CV; 1-2 page statement of teaching philosophy, including a discussion of experience and approaches to supporting students of diverse backgrounds; 1-2 page research statement; a sample of scholarship and creative work (candidates may send a single article or excerpt of approximately 25 pages, or up to three shorter pieces of the same total length); and contact information for three references. Further materials may be requested from short-listed candidates. Application deadline is October 17, 2025.
