Job Description
Responsible for leading and managing all academic support services for football student-athletes. This position provides oversight, guidance, and accountability to ensure student-athletes achieve academic success, remain eligible per NCAA, conference, and institutional standards, and make meaningful progress toward graduation. The Director will serve as the primary academic liaison between the football program, faculty, advisors, and campus.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead the football academic support team, including academic advisors, GA's, and tutors.
- Coordinate the Textbook Scholarship Program.
- Facilitate study hall, tutoring, and mentoring programs tailored to the needs of football student-athletes.
- Help students understand University and degree requirements and develop a responsible approach to academic planning.
- Maintain accurate academic records, develop statistical analysis of academic success or challenges and provide data as requested regarding the academic progress of student-athletes on an on-going basis.
- Assist with on-campus recruitment visits of student-athletes by preliminarily assessing their admissions status for APSU and academic eligibility status by NCAA standards. This includes being one of two people responsible solely for transfer evaluations.
Knowledge Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) and SungardHE Banner.
- Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.
- Ability to interact in an effective and appropriate manner with various populations, the University community and the public.
- Ability to maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to demonstrate effective athletic personnel and programmatic administration, leadership and supervisory skills and strategies.
- Ability to relate to student athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and parents.
- Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations as well as APR used by NCAA institutions.
- Ability to interpret and adhere to NCAA Rules, APSU Academic Standards and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.
- Ability to work some nights/weekends and travel.
- Ability to meet the needs of student athletes experiencing adjustment or academic difficulties.
- Ability to monitor continuing eligibility and satisfactory progress of student-athletes each semester/term using APR, NCAA and University guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree.
- Proven experience in athletic academic advising on the intercollegiate level.
- A background check will be required of the successful applicant.
- An official transcript and names, addresses and phone numbers of three (3) references will be required for the successful applicant.
Physical Requirements
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
