Director of Intercultural Life
Position Overview
The Director of Intercultural Life is responsible for leading efforts centering on services of inclusion, student leadership development, cross-cultural programming and serves as a strategic partner between academic and non-academic departments.
This role focuses on campus programming targeted to increase awareness and understanding of topics related to race, inclusion, and equity. The Director serves as a key advisor to students, student organizations, various alumni and volunteer boards. In addition to representing the Division of Student Life on campus committees, the Director of Intercultural Life will supervise two professional staff and provide insight in supporting retention efforts of the college.
This position will require the person to be a part of the central on-call staff for the Division of Student Life and work occasional nights and weekends. To succeed in this role, the Director will be a collaborative strategic leader, people-centered, equity-minded, and data driven in their program design.
Compensation
The expected starting salary range for this position is between $86,300 and $89,100. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
Office Overview
The Office of Intercultural Life (OIL) strives to create a diverse and welcoming campus community that embraces individual differences, advocates for social justice, and cultivates inclusion. OIL centers the experiences of students of color while working collaboratively to create a campus wide culture of understanding and belonging.
The office is open to assist all students regardless of race, gender, color, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, and national or ethnic origin. However, the office has a unique role with regard to enhancing the overall experience for students of color on campus by focusing on retention, programming, leadership development, training and education. The work of the office reflects the changing paradigms of student growth, particularly as it relates to community building and fostering a sense of connection.
The Office of Intercultural Life has four goals:
- Foster belonging by creating a supportive environment where students of color feel accepted, included, and valued as their authentic selves.
- Build community by maximizing engagement and strengthening bonds among individuals and communities of color.
- Support academic success and retention through collaboration with faculty, deans, and college resources.
- Support initiatives that raise awareness and address disparities impacting vulnerable communities.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities
- Develop and implement programming that reflects the community’s needs in collaboration with the Division of Student Life departments, student organizations, non-academic, and academic departments.
- Lead short-term & long-term strategic planning for the office, including routine assessment of operations, activities, and partnerships, to help make data driven decisions.
- Help support initiatives for the persistence of students of color at Carleton through interdepartmental collaboration and offering programs and services specifically designed to aid students adjust and thrive at the College.
- Lead communication efforts related to the office (i.e. management of websites, social media oversight and other technology outlets used to enhance the work of the team)
- Collaborate with various campus partners in building/sustaining student success models (i.e. Division of Inclusion, Equity and Community, ACM Minority Concerns Committee, and the Multicultural Alumni Network (MCAN).
- Represent the Division of Student Life and Carleton College at key events, as needed, including, but not limited to: student and alumni events, community outreach efforts, recruitment events, and regional/national associations.
- Manage and maximize the office’s fiscal resources to achieve its mission and goals.
- Provide supervision and direction to two professional staff members
Education/Experience/Skills
Required:
- Master’s degree and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in Higher Education.
- Current experience with managing multiple financial resources effectively and efficiently.
- Experience with creating and leading programming to support students of color and cultivate community.
- Current or recent experience managing and supervising professional staff.
- Strong understanding of student development and college adjustment for students of color.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to build strong relationships and partnerships with individuals and organizations representing diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
Preferred:
- Experience working in a college setting
- Liberal Arts Education experience
- Experience leading the design, implementation, and evaluation of services that promote expanding representation and opportunities.
- Demonstrated commitment to assessment strategies related to program development and learning.
- Current experience working with faculty and staff in a college or university.
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
