Southwestern College announces a search for Director of the Nursing program. Aligned with the SC 2028 strategic plan, Southwestern College relaunched the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program in the fall of 2025 and our nursing program is entering a planned leadership transition. The current Director of Nursing will step down from the full-time director position on June 30, 2026, move to a part-time transition role on July 1, 2026, and conclude employment on December 31, 2026. This transition model is intended to provide continuity of leadership while supporting onboarding of a new long-term director. The foundational work of developing the Nursing program has been completed, and the program is now entering a phase that requires strong day-to-day academic leadership, visible student engagement, relationship-centered leadership, recruitment activity, and sustained execution.

The Director of the Nursing Program is accountable to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. The Director provides leadership and management in the daily operations and the future direction of the Nursing Program. The Director assures excellence in the nursing program based on university mission and strategic priorities, best practices in teaching and learning modalities, integration of faith and learning and standards for professional practice. This is a full-time twelve-month nursing faculty position with delegated administrative release time. Faculty serving in this role also assume the role of standing nursing faculty related to teaching, scholarship, professional development and service to the school and profession. Academic rank is assigned dependent upon credentials and experience. The retiring Founding Director will continue in a part-time capacity to act as a mentor to the incoming Director to ensure a smooth transition.

We are looking for candidates who have:

  1. A master’s degree in nursing from a regionally accredited college/university, a doctorate is preferred.
  2. An active unencumbered Registered Nurse license, with eligibility to be licensed in Kansas.
  3. Two (2) years full time or equivalent clinical experience as a practicing Registered Nurse.
  4. Three (3) years of teaching experience teaching in a baccalaureate and higher degree nationally accredited nursing program or equivalent educational/teaching experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
  5. Two (2) to Three (3) years of full-time experience in a previous academic nursing administrative position or clinical nursing administrative position is preferred.
  6. Demonstrates effective organizational, problem-solving, leadership and decision-making skills.
  7. Position requires high energy, innovation, persistence, dedication to students and commitment to nursing education as ministry.
  8. Articulate, energetic and enthusiastic regarding Southwestern College and the nursing program.

Key Job Duties

  1. Provide strong day-to-day academic and relationship-centered leadership, management and oversight for the Nursing Program to ensure a successful program.
  2. Be responsible for communication with the Kansas State Board of Nursing, CCNE and ensure that the program meets requirements and standards for approval and accreditation.
  3. Lead and collaborate with the Dean of Faculty, faculty and staff to assure quality of the academic program curriculum, student assessment, policy, resources, services and daily operations.
  4. Lead and collaborate with staff to implement and administer the daily operations and policies for the nursing program including semester planning, course schedules, faculty/student communication and NCLEX trends.
  5. Collaborate with the Dean of Faculty in establishing faculty teaching assignments. Interview, mentor and evaluate all faculty.
  6. Participate in the development, review, and revision of all official college publications, documents and reports related to the nursing program.
  7. Contribute information, oversight and feedback for the preparation of nursing budget expenditures, fees, and resource needs.
  8. Collaborate with Admissions to support the recruitment of Pre-nursing students to the College and oversee the admissions process into the BSN program.
  9. Interact positively and effectively with all faculty and students, understand all nursing courses, and stay current with all faculty and student concerns, including learning contracts and progression plans.
  10. Promote and support professional development and scholarship for faculty colleagues.
  11. Teach 6 credits in the BSN program annually.
  12. Visible student engagement:
    ø Oversee undergraduate admissions, progression, and retention including student learning contracts and revised progression plans.
    ø Coordinate and lead student events including orientations, student meetings, and ongoing student communication.
    ø Oversee and serve as an academic advisor for undergraduate students, including serving as the pre-nursing and BSN advisor.
