Position Summary

At Stony Brook Medicine, the Director of Patient Flow and Capacity Management is a valuable member of our throughput team, who will oversee daily operations of the CTO, a 24/7 centralized bed management and flow hub. This includes bed coordination assignments, daily planning for predicted admissions, management of beds during surges in patient volume, the patient callback center, coordination of operating room operations as it pertains to patient flow, and coordination of daily discharge huddles. This also includes overseeing staff, developing budgets, creating policies and procedures related to patient flow, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and required data submissions.

The Director of Patient Flow and Capacity Management will coordinate process improvement projects in conjunction with the Quality Improvement (QI) department to ensure efficient movement of patients from admission to discharge- minimizing bottlenecks and improving overall patient care. This role is responsible for implementing and maintaining systems to track patient movement in real time acting as a key IT liaison. The Director of Patient Flow and Capacity Management plays a key role in Emergency Management planning and exercises to manage flow during critical events.

A successful Director of Patient Flow and Capacity Management will possess superior communication and leadership skills to ensure collaboration between the organization's leadership, quality, and care management teams. They will coordinate with all hospitals in the SBM system and EMS to facilitate and expedite safe transfers, improving coordinated bed management. They will lead, develop, and implement strategies to reduce length of stay, improve resource utilization, and enhance the patient experience.

Duties of a Director of Patient Flow and Capacity Management may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Real-time oversight of flow throughput the organization including the ED, inpatient units, Operating room, and transfers to and from SBUH.
  • Plans staff monthly and vacation time schedules
  • Interviews and recommendations for selection of nursing staff
  • Manages the Discharge Call Back program and staff
  • Meet regularly with the Medical Director, AVP of Operations, and AVP of Nursing
  • Holds daily CTO staff huddles
  • Lead the CTO HRU and POD meetings in collaboration with the QI department
  • Works collaboratively with all organizational departments and service lines on throughput quality initiatives
  • Resolve operational issues related to patient flow and investigate all safety concerns
  • Manage data analytics as related to throughput
  • Delegate's specific responsibilities to CTO staff according to their abilities and the task at hand, providing them with direction and supervision for successful task completion.
  • Monitors the quality of work rendered and conducts ongoing review of bed coordination duties
  • Ensures all staff's compliance with policies including safety and environmental standards.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • NYS RN Licensure.
  • Minimum ten years post-licensure in nursing with progressive leadership responsibilities.
  • Master's degree in nursing, Health Care Administration or related field or current enrollment in a Master's Program.
  • Minimum five years relevant Throughput/Quality experience
  • High Proficiency in computer skills
  • Strong Communication skills

  • Advanced Certification

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position is - $142800 - $203597 / year.

The above salary range represents SBUH's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. The specific salary offer will be based on the candidate's validated years of comparable experience. Any efforts to inflate or misrepresent experience are grounds for disqualification from the application process or termination of employment if hired.
