BASIC PURPOSE:

The Director of Student Engagement is responsible for student leadership development, first-year orientation, campus social and educational programming, Activities Board, and over 40 other clubs and organizations. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director is a vital member of campus life and contributes to the development of a vibrant co-curricular life within the context of the Catholic mission of the University. Attendance at and participation in campus programs is expected.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  1. Supervision
    • Direct and supervise the work of departmental employees including, though not limited to supervising, training, scheduling, and evaluating employees.
    • Exercises judgment and discretion in supervising and advising student organizations including adherence to and revisions of their Constitutions, election and selection processes for officers and executive board positions, training, budget allocation, and financial responsibility.
    • Serve as the advisor to the Student Government Association.
    • Specific oversight of the first year and senior class officers, fundraisers, events and activities specific for this population.
    • Oversight of all SGA approved campus clubs and student organizations, including development of and adherence to an organization Constitution, selection of an advisor(s), financial records, and fundraising initiatives, creation of a procedure manual/handbook, and general policies and procedures related to these clubs and organizations.
    • Oversight, along with the Assistant Director and Coordinator, of the major events including Family Weekend, Winterfest, Spring Concert and Senior Week.
    • Oversight, along with the Coordinator, of all pub events and late-night weekend programs.
    • Oversight of community outreach programs, including 1904 Day.
  2. Administrative
    • Practice strong organizational and fiscal management skills with departmental budgets.
    • Manage Student Activities Fee budget, Orientation budget, Student Government budget, and class budgets.
    • Facilitate the election process for the Student Government Association.
    • Coordinate the training for student organization leaders.
    • Oversight, along with the Student Activities Fee Committee, of the allotment of the student activities fee money to appropriate organizations on campus.
    • Provide recommendations, advice, and support for the programming efforts of other offices, such as Residential Life, Campus Ministry, Health Services, Counseling Services, Reach Out Center, Cross-Cultural Center, Athletics, and Campus Recreation.
    • Responsible for coordination of June Orientation, and August New Student Orientation programs. Work collaboratively with the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs to ensure balanced and meaningful programs addressing academic and social transition issues.
    • Coordinate and implement Transfer Student Orientation August and January.
    • Development of annual learning outcomes with appropriate and tangible measurement methods to ensure goals and objectives for student learning are being met.
    • Responsible for student leadership initiatives. This includes students in formal leadership roles as well programs open to all students.
    • Assist with University special events such as, but not limited to, the Matriculation ceremony and Commencement.
    • Pursue professional development opportunities and participates in regional and/or national organizations related to activities (NACA) and orientation (NODA).
    • Participate in administrator on-call rotation for division of Student Affairs.
  3. Programming
    • Plan, develop and manage a vibrant and active weekend programming efforts, which includes the hiring, supervising, training, and evaluation of staff.
    • Develop, plan and implement student leadership development programs including student leader training programs in August and January and other campus leadership initiatives.
    • Identify, evaluate, and continuously assess programs, events, and departmental services to ensure consistency with mission and division goals and student needs.
  4. Serve on University committees where needed as a representative of the division of Student Affairs.
  5. Serve as a Campus Security Authority for Clery reporting purposes and a Responsible Employee for Title IX reporting purposes.
  6. May be assigned other related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be willing to contribute actively to the mission of the University as well as show respect for the Catholic and Assumptionist identity of Assumption College.
  • Master's degree in higher education or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in student activities or closely related field.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience with supervision of professional staff.
  • Experience supervising and/or advising students and/or student organizations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the value of co-curricular learning experiences.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends and attend student events required.

SCOPE:

  • Regularly serves on a variety of campus committees, and other ad-hoc committees as assigned.
  • Maintains active membership in a variety of professional organizations to stay abreast developments and innovations in the field of student activities.
  • Interacts regularly with a variety of student committees and groups, students, staff, administrators, parents, agents, vendors, and performers.
  • Supervises the work of approximately 2 full-time employees, one part-time employee, and one graduate assistance.
  • Manages an annual departmental operating budget of approximately $25,000. Also manages (approximate) programming budgets as follows: Student/Parent Orientation - $110,000.; and Student Government Association - $520,000.
