Location: Raleigh, NC, some travel within NC required. Note: This position requires an on campus presence to effectively perform the essential duties of the position. As such, employees must reside within a commutable distance and must report to campus regularly.
Essential Job Duties:
Overview/Primary purpose of position: The Director of Teaching Fellows serves as the strategic leader for the NC State Teaching Fellows Program, which has evolved into a high-impact, large-scale initiative with substantial institutional and statewide influence. What began as a modest program has grown to currently across multiple cohorts, requiring executive-level oversight, cross-functional collaboration, and robust supervision to ensure its ongoing success and sustainability. The Director also serves as the face of the program-championing its mission, enhancing its visibility, and fostering relationships that strengthen its impact across the university and state. In addition to directing the Teaching Fellows Program, this role also provides critical leadership for all graduation-related activities. This includes overseeing event logistics, coordinating with faculty and campus partners, communicating with graduates and their families, and managing on-site execution.
Program Leadership (60%):
- The director provides direct supervision and support to all participants in the NC State Teaching Fellows Program, including a current cohort of several hundred undergraduate students, program staff, and graduate assistants. This includes overseeing day-to-day operations, mentoring staff, managing performance, coordinating student engagement and support efforts. The Director exercises executive-level judgment in staffing decisions, workload distribution, professional development, and conflict resolution to maintain a high-functioning and mission-driven team.
- In addition to overseeing the student cohort, this role is also responsible for directing the work of the Graduate Assistant(s) and the Program Operations Staff to ensure the continued integrity, consistency, and overall quality of the Teaching Fellows Program. The Director provides guidance, sets priorities, and ensures alignment with program goals and university standards, while managing team performance.
- The Director leads the full implementation of a multi-pathway student development program, overseeing operations from student recruitment to alumni engagement. This includes: Managing state-mandated financial aid disbursements and scholarship tracking; Coordinating with internal departments such as Financial Aid, Registration and Records, and the College of Education; Leading strategic planning, calendar development, and program design for a multi-year student experience.
- Engages regularly with campus-wide and external entity as a leader of CED, representing the college.
- Is responsible for budgetary stewardship;
- Leads cross-departmental and multi-level coordination efforts.
Team and Organizational Management (5%):
- Oversees the day-to-day performance of the graduate assistant team and administrative staff.
- Facilitates professional development opportunities for staff and team members (including grad assistants and temporary employees), promoting a culture of growth and innovation.
- Ensures clear communication channels within the team and with other departments, building alignment and shared accountability.
- Prepares and presents regular performance and project reports, contributing to data-informed decision-making.
- Addresses and resolves internal team issues, and coaches others toward collaborative resolution.
Strategic Planning and Program Development (10%):
- Designs and implements strategies aligned with organizational goals, working closely with college leadership and external stakeholders.
- Leads calendar development, program alignment, and strategic planning for multi-pathway student experiences.
- Represents the Teaching Fellows Program in high-level decision-making spaces, including monthly CEPC meetings, accreditation efforts, and statewide strategic education planning.
- Collaborates with institutional partners to identify emerging trends, evaluate program outcomes, and implement data-informed improvements that enhance student success and program sustainability.
Complex Financial and Legislative Management (10%):
- Oversees state funding distributions with nuanced eligibility structures based on student pathways.
- Coordinates with NCSEAA and other financial entities to ensure timely processing, compliance, and verification of funds.
- Manages program budgets, tracks expenditures, and ensures adherence to evolving state legislation and institutional policy.
- Ensures that all financial operations comply with accounting best practices, state regulations, and internal audit standards.
High-Level Collaboration and External Representation (5%):
- Serves as the primary liaison to external agencies and statewide policy conversations related to teacher preparation.
- Collaborates extensively with faculty, financial aid offices, and College of Education leadership.
- Participates in legislative advocacy efforts, grant alignment, and system-wide planning to improve outcomes for North Carolina educators.
- Provides policy input and strategic insight to senior leadership and executive teams.
Leading and Executing Events (10%):
- Leads the planning and execution of the College of Education's spring and fall commencement ceremonies, including securing venues, developing event timelines, and coordinating day-of logistics to ensure a smooth, celebratory, and safe experience for all participants.
- Collaborates with the graduation committee and MARCOM team to ensure successful execution of materials and resources needed for graduation events, such as scripts, printed programs, signage, and staffing plans, while maintaining close communication with faculty, staff, and students.
- Coordinates annual celebration events, including student and family luncheons, receptions, and recognition gatherings, serving as the primary point of contact and event lead.
- Chairs the Graduation Committee and leads regular planning meetings, ensuring cross-departmental coordination, delegation of tasks, and timely execution of all graduation-related responsibilities in alignment with college standards and timelines. Collaborates with program directors to align graduation activities with academic schedules.
Other Work/Responsibilities: Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.
Minimum Experience/Education: Master's degree in higher education, student development, or related education field. At least 4 years of full-time experience working in education/student affairs. Experience supporting college students from all backgrounds. Previous experience with teaching and curriculum development. Evidence of experience developing or working with student teachers. Working knowledge of assessment and its importance to student success. Ability to lead staff, advisors, and students through the intricacies, process, and comprehension of graduation requirements. Ability to evaluate complex educational plans for students and work with students to develop meaningful options. Ability to collaborate with relevant services and resources to assist the student in problem resolution. Excel in detailed written and verbal communications with students, colleagues, and parents. Awareness of North Carolina Teaching Licensure Requirements. Have a working knowledge of current issues facing K-12 education. Knowledge of community college transfer requirements, policies, and experiences of transfer students' experiences. Exhibit leadership and foster an open environment for understanding and working with all student populations and colleagues.
Required Qualifications: Strategic Program Leadership - Ability to lead large-scale, high-impact academic programs with vision and long-term planning. Cross-Functional Team Management - Experience supervising full-time staff, graduate assistants, and student cohorts within an academic unit. Student Development and Engagement - Proficiency in designing and managing multi-year student engagement models tailored to developmental milestones. Event Planning and Execution - Expertise in coordinating complex, high-profile events such as commencements and student recognition ceremonies. Budget and Financial Stewardship - Skill in managing state-funded budgets, tracking expenditures, and ensuring fiscal compliance with state and institutional policies. Legislative and Policy Interpretation - Ability to understand and implement changes related to state educational policy and scholarship eligibility requirements. University Systems Navigation - Familiarity with campus systems (e.g., Financial Aid, Registration & Records) and interdepartmental coordination. Stakeholder Communication - Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with university leadership, faculty, students, families, and external partners. Data-Informed Decision Making - Ability to interpret program metrics and student outcomes to guide strategic improvements. Advocacy and Representation - Confidence in representing the College in statewide initiatives, strategic planning efforts, and legislative discussions. Team Building and Staff Development - Commitment to mentoring and growing team capacity through professional development and collaborative goal-setting. Project and Calendar Management - Capacity to coordinate and align long-term programmatic activities with academic calendars and college initiatives. Proficiency with Digital Tools and Systems - Demonstrated skill using digital technologies such as Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Forms, Calendar) and other critical systems necessary for managing program operations and communications.
Preferred Qualifications: K-12 teaching experience, preferably in North Carolina.
