About the role | Kōrero mō te tūranga
Based in AUT's People & Culture directorate, you will lead our Health and Safety team and provide expert advice and information to the university's leaders as we ensure AUT is a healthy and safe place to work and study. Your passion, specialist knowledge and leadership skills will effectively promote, champion and drive continuous improvement to our safe system of work. You will become a highly trusted and effective leader and business partner for the University's leaders and staff as we raise capability and change behaviours - through engagement, education, mentoring and influencing.
Key duties for the Director include:
- Influence senior leadership, and gain buy-in across the university, enabling you to educate, coach, influence and support our leaders to establish a strong, positive H&S culture
- Represent the H&S function at a strategic level, shaping how the university approaches safety
- Analyse H&S risks and challenges and come up with potential solutions and recommendations and communicate clearly to our senior leaders, and subsequently ensure their implementation
- Ensure relevant HSW policies, procedures and systems are in place to support a high level of compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation
You will embody confidence, trustworthiness, and kindness as you lead a high performing H&S team of H&S practitioners.

- A tertiary qualification in Occupational Health and Safety
- A persuasive, influential and engaging style at Board and Executive level
- Extensive experience operating as a senior H&S leader in a similar large complex environment
- Demonstrated experience leading a high performing H&S team
- Experience conducting complex, high consequence investigations
- A professional and pragmatic approach
- The ability to drive culture change and introduce new ways of doing things
