Discovery of New Treatments for Parkinson’s disease

About the Project

Summary

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurological disease in the world. Current PD therapies and medical interventions are very limited and only address the symptoms of this disease highlighting the need for new and effective treatments for this disease.

Recently, we discovered a series of small molecules that have the potential to treat Parkinson’s disease. Encouraged by this, we now seek to recruit a diligent and highly motivated PhD student to further develop the compounds we discovered as potential Parkinson’s disease treatment.

From working on this project, the PhD candidate will learn the synthesis, purification and characterisation of small molecules, drug design and development as well as assay development for testing the biological activities of synthetic molecules. Such knowledge will be extremely valuable for those wishing to pursue a career in academia or with pharmaceutical/biotechnology companies.

The work will be based at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Cardiff University, UK. Contact Dr. Youcef Mehellou (MehellouY1@cardiff.ac.uk) for informal inquiries.

Funding Notes

The PhD opportunity is a full time 3 year programme working with academic researchers in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences

Currently the opening is only available to those candidates able to evidence sponsorship for their PhD tuition fees, bench fees and subsistence costs (3 years of study).

Applicants must have obtained a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualification gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science.
