Novel Design and Formulation Strategies to Enhance Drug Delivery
About the Project
The main research activities of my research group concern the improvement of traditional drug formulation and development of novel drug and formulation strategies to enhance bioavailability and patient acceptability. We are particularly interested in delivering agents (including biologics) through the biological barriers, particularly the skin, mucosal barrier, ocular, topical biofilms and the associated antibiotic resistance. Site-specific carriers to enhance drug delivery are also investigated.
Current projects include the use of nanoparticles and biopolymers as drug carriers to enhance drug targeting, novel formulations as an antimicrobial strategy, and transdermal microneedle patches capable of complex dosing. We are currently seeking motivated students of high calibres to develop these fields further. Prospective students should get in touch to discuss their specific interests and areas they wish to work in.

Research Training and Environment
Newcastle University’s School of Pharmacy has a vibrant research community. The student will additionally be affiliated with the Translational and Clinical Research Institute, which provides access to further world-class research infrastructure and expertise. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to develop their own cutting-edge research project spanning multiple disciplines including medicinal chemistry, cell culture, immunology, pharmacology, microbiology, drug delivery and formulation. Interested candidates should contact Dr Wing Man Lau via wing.lau@newcastle.ac.uk to discuss potential projects.
Funding Notes
This project is suitable for self-funded students or students with third-party sponsorship. There is no dedicated funding from the university for this project. The student will be expected to provide funding for tuition fees and living expenses. UK students may be able to apply for a Doctoral Loan from Student Finance for financial support. Some students may be eligible to apply for supplemental funding.
Details about the tuition fees and a supplemental funding search tool are available on our website: View Website.
