Doctoral Researcher/Project Researcher, Computational Neuroscience

The University of Eastern Finland is inviting applications for a Doctoral Researcher/Project Researcher position at the A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences on the Kuopio Campus. The position will be filled for a fixed term until 31 August 2028 from 1 October 2025 onwards (or as agreed).

The A.I. Virtanen Institute for Molecular Sciences addresses global health challenges by focusing on research of brain and cardiovascular diseases. This project, funded by the Research Council of Finland, uses computational methods for analyzing histological images, magnetic resonance imaging, and statistical physics to understand brain microstructure.

Your main responsibilities include:

• Conducting research in accordance with the project aims.
• Reporting and creating high-quality scientific publications.
• May involve participating in grant writing.

The position is for a fixed term due to it pertaining to the candidate’s doctoral degree or a specific project task. The salary is based on the Finnish university salary system, approximately EUR 2,510–2,784 per month.

Requirements:

• A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline such as electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics.
• For a PhD position, qualification to pursue postgraduate studies at the University of Eastern Finland.
• Excellent skills in oral and written English.
• Demonstrated experience in engineering, mathematics, and programming.
• Track record of scientific publications (if any).

Advantages: Ability to work independently, knowledge of 3D computer vision, tomography reconstruction, electron microscopy, and MRI.
