The Department of Veterinary Sciences in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder at the interface of the fields of neurology and hematology.
Position
- You will work actively on the preparation of a PhD thesis in the field of translational ischemic stroke research. By using innovative humanized mouse models and samples from ischemic stroke patients, this project aims to better understand how the detrimental interaction between thrombosis and the immune system (immunothrombosis) drives brain injury after stroke and contributes to disease progression.
- You will be integrated into a dynamic and multidisciplinary research environment within the Laboratory of Cell Biology and Histology (CBH) at the University of Antwerp. The project will also closely interact with the Antwerp Centre for Advanced Microscopy (ACAM), an advanced imaging facility embedded within CBH that provides state-of-the-art microscopy infrastructure and expertise for studying cellular processes in health and disease.
- You will publish high-quality scientific articles related to the research project and present your work through posters and presentations at (inter)national conferences.
- You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the Laboratory of Cell Biology and Histology.
Profile
- You hold a Master degree in Biomedical sciences, Bio-engineering, Pharmaceutical sciences, Biochemistry, Veterinary sciences, or an equivalent degree; or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
- You can demonstrate excellent study results.
- Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
- Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
- You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
- You stand for open and honest communication.
- You have strong analytical thinking skills, an appropriate problem-solving attitude, can systematically approach complex issues and is an excellent planner to meet deadlines.
- You have a FELASA B/C attest for animal research.
- You are willing to work with animal models
- You are flexible with working hours as per the needs of certain phases of the experiments.
- You are willing to apply for an external PhD fellowship (e.g. FWO).
What we offer
- We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of one year. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed for another period of 1 year, up until a maximum of 4 years in total.
- The planned start date is July 1, or as soon as possible after that date.
- Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders.
- You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- As a doctoral researcher, you will have access to a wide and varied range of courses and an educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School.
- You will do most of your work at Campus Drie Eiken, Wilrijk, Belgium in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
