Department Summary
University Health and Counseling (UHC) provides comprehensive, public-health informed preventative and clinical services (counseling individual, group, relationships; 14 different medical services and specialties, nursing, pharmacy, diagnostic services), mental health promotion, education, training, outreach, and postvention to the U-M campus community (students, faculty, staff, retirees and guests). An actively merging unit of two accredited departments University Health Service (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care/AAAHC) and Counseling & Psychological Services (International Association of Counseling Services/IACS) with >220 staff and trainees, UHC provides coordinated, integrated care within the same electronic health record (Epic/MiChart) as Michigan Medicine (MM), where many community members also receive emergency, inpatient, and outpatient care (e.g., MM emergency departments, inpatient services, intensive outpatient programs, partial hospitalization programs, and specialist ambulatory care). UHC operates in two primary locations (Michigan Union, 530 S. State St.; University Health Service, 207 Fletcher St.) as well as in embedded counselor offices in 18 schools/colleges across central and north campus. UHC is a unit of U-M Student Life (SL) and reports to the SL Associate Vice President for Health & Wellbeing and up to the Vice President of Student Life, who is a U-M Executive Officer (EO).
Position Summary
This position is intended to provide counseling services to undergraduate and graduate UM students and may include other services like mental health outreach, group counseling, and consultation with campus partners. This is a 12-month permanent appointment. Open staff counseling positions would be located in our Central office or at specific schools/colleges in our Embedded Model. Embedded positions will also involve work at either our Central office or at other Embedded sites. This position reports to a CAPS Associate Director or Assistant Director.
Clinical: 60%
- Direct clinical service, including individual/group counseling and crisis coverage - with adjustments made based on role or combination of roles in the agency (supervisor, seminar leader, coordinator (range of 19-24 hours/week) as well as based on time of the calendar year (e.g., less direct clinical service in the Summer)
- Providing and interpreting psychometric testing as needed
Administrative/Indirect Clinical Service: 20%
- Attend all center functions (staff meetings, clinical team meetings, work teams, retreats)
- Actively participate in agency and University initiatives
- Clinical documentation
- Clinical care coordination as needed (e.g., with community providers, UHS, Michigan Medicine providers) as well as communication with support units as needed (disability services, Dean of Students, academic advising)
- Provide consultation to counseling center staff/trainees and UM staff and faculty
Training: 10%
- Active involvement in all training programs including clinical supervision of psychology trainees, mentoring, and teaching/presenting seminars
Outreach and Community Engagement: 10%
- Increasing awareness of mental health and decreasing stigma through campus-wide initiatives, psycho-educational workshops, tabling, providing website content, attendance at campus events, and liaison services
Required Qualifications
Doctorate Level: Doctoral degree in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, or a closely related field, from an APA-accredited program, and APA-accredited internship.
- Licensed/license eligible in the State of Michigan. Must obtain full license within 2 years. If the full license is not acquired within two years, employment may be terminated
- Clinical experience with a college student/young adult population
ORMasters Level: Masters degree in Social Work, Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology or Counseling
- Licensed or license eligible in the State of Michigan (applicant does not need to be dually licensed. LLMSW, LMSW or LPC are acceptable):
- If the applicant is a Social Worker full license must be obtained within 2 years. If the full license is not acquired within two years, employment may be terminated
OR
- If the applicant is a Professional Counselor must be fully licensed
- Clinical experience with a college student/young adult population
Underfill Notice: This position may be underfilled at the Master's Level Mental Health Clinician classification, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Salary
Doctorate Level Mental Health Clinician Posting Salary range:
- Limited License $68,450 - $75,300
- Full License $75,300 - $82,200
- Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of selected candidates
Masters Level Mental Health Clinician Posting Salary range:
- Limited License $60,850 - $67,000
- Full License $67,000 - $73,050
- Salary may vary depending on qualifications, experience, and education of selected candidates
Position Criteria
These are the criteria that the hiring team will evaluate you for your demonstrated competency and expertise in the following areas:
- working clinically with college student/young adult populations, including common theoretical approaches (e.g., DBT, ACT, CBT, family systems, etc.)
- expertise, or interest in developing an expertise, with psycho-educational programming and outreach with a focus on the context of college student life
- multicultural competency/work with diversity and difference in current professional role or professional-in-training role
Working Conditions
Hybrid: In office 4 days a week and option to work remote 1 day a week. 1st shift: Monday-Friday.
Physical Requirements
The incumbent is required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods.
Additional Information
