Edith L. Trees Faculty in Disability & Special Need Medicine
Primary Purpose
The Edith L. Trees Faculty in Disability Medicine leads the development and delivery of the COM’s Disability competency-based curriculum. The faculty member will also participate in student mentorship, instruction, research, and scholarly activity related to disabilities, special needs, and their specialty area.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Academic:
- Leads the planning, development, and delivery of the curriculum, including topics, courses, and methods of instruction that relate to disabilities competencies in all four years of the medical school curriculum, as assigned.
- Participates in the instruction and supervision of medical students at all phases of training, including didactics, small group discussions, clinical cases, labs, clinical patient care, simulation training, procedure training, and standardized patient encounters.
- Assists with the delivery of the clinical curriculum in the first and second years, including designing early clinical learning and service opportunities for students with patients who have disabilities and their caretakers.
- Assists with the development and implementation of clinical rotations and experiences in the third and fourth years alongside physicians and other healthcare professionals who care for patients with disabilities.
- Provides support and assistance to other COM faculty regarding the integration and implementation of clinical cases and specialty topics within various areas of the curriculum.
- Develops interprofessional learning activities related to disabilities in collaboration with other Duquesne University programs.
Administrative:
- Promotes, by example, a general atmosphere of respect for knowledge, thought, and inquiry within the University and in clinical settings.
- Contributes to the planning, development, and evaluation of courses and academic programs within the University with a special emphasis on patients with disabilities.
- Meets regularly with supervisor to provide updates on curriculum, mentorship, and research projects.
- Participates in COM activities as assigned.
Clinical Practice:
- Participates in international and regional medical mission trips and clinical programs, including required travel, preparation, clinical care, and supervision.
- Participates in regional community outreach programs and clinical care to support the mission of the COM.
- Maintains competency, licensure, and certification in the field, including required continuing medical education hours. Keeps abreast of new developments, guidelines, and advancements in literature.
Service:
- Serves on committees within the medical school as assigned.
- Represents the COM by serving on regional, state, and/or national committees related to patients with disabilities, including but not limited to the Alliance for Disability in Health Care Education.
- Collaborates with other faculty within the COM and the University to develop and implement the educational curriculum.
- Serves as a faculty mentor or advisor for students as assigned.
- Participates in interviewing applicants for potential admission to the COM.
- Participates as an item writer for the NBOME.
- Participates in required COM faculty development.
Research:
- Participates in research and scholarly activity, contributing to the research strategic plan.
- Maintains documentation and reporting for grant funding related to the Edith L. Trees grant alongside the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
- Participates in scholarly projects, publications, presentations, grant applications, and documentation related to disability and special needs curriculum alongside the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
- Participates in and supports student involvement with educational, clinical, and/or other disability and special needs-related research and scholarly activity.
Completes other duties as assigned.
DO or MD degree required from an accredited institution. Other healthcare professionals with significant expertise in caring for patients with disabilities and special needs may be considered.
Must have an active and unrestricted state medical license and be able to obtain unrestricted medical licensure in PA. (as applicable.
Active board certification is required from the AOA or ABMS. Board eligibility may be considered for those who have recently completed residency or fellowship training. (as applicable.
Must demonstrate a commitment to patients and caretakers with disabilities and special needs including experience in delivering clinical patient care. Experience teaching is preferred.
Must have excellent written, verbal, management, administrative, and organizational skills with the ability to balance multiple priorities.
Must be able to effectively interact with administration, faculty, staff, and students as well as build and unify teams.
Must be supportive of the mission of the COM and be willing to collaborate with the University and COM leadership to achieve the mission and vision.
Preferred:
Previous experience in graduate or undergraduate medical education is preferred.
Strong candidates will have experience with curriculum development, clinical skill education (clinical cases, table training, entrustable professional activities, and milestones), medical student assessment, and graduate medical education standards and development.
Be able and willing to practice clinically and supervise Duquesne University medical students in clinical settings.
Alternately, the applicants may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the essential job functions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the University Community.
